90_SR0245 LRB9013227CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate are saddened to learn 3 of the death of Warrington Hudlin, Sr. of East St. Louis on 4 Friday, September 25, 1998; and 5 WHEREAS, He was born on July 31, 1922 in Hot Springs, 6 Arkansas, the son of Myrtle Johnson Hudlin, a teacher, and 7 Edward "Pops" Hudlin, a stone mason; and 8 WHEREAS, The family moved to New York City in 1934 and 9 Warrington Hudlin worked as a Western Union bicycle messenger 10 while attending Haaren High School; he danced the jitterbug 11 at the Savoy Ballroom; and he won the Paddle Ball 12 Championship of the New York City; and 13 WHEREAS, A veteran of the U.S. Army, he attended St. 14 Louis University, where he was among the first black 15 students; he graduated in 1951 with a degree in political 16 science; he earned a master's degree in education 17 administration from Southern Illinois University at 18 Edwardsville in 1970; and 19 WHEREAS, He worked as a teacher in the East St. Louis 20 school system while building his own business, the Hudlin & 21 Co. Insurance Agency, which became the most successful 22 insurance agency in East St. Louis; and 23 WHEREAS, He was affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce, 24 the Kiwanis Club, the Board of State Community College, the 25 Urban League, the United Way, the Union Bank, Christian 26 Welfare Hospital, the Belleville News-Democrat Advisory 27 Council, and St, Luke AME Church; and 28 WHEREAS, He was honored by the National Urban League with 29 the 1981 Award of Merit for Civic Progress; he also earned a 30 pilot's license, learned to sail, and was an avid tennis 31 player; and -2- LRB9013227CBcb 1 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 2 and friends, especially his former wife, Helen Cason Hudlin; 3 his sons, Warrington, Jr., Christopher, and Reginald; a 4 grandson, Jason; his sister, Lucille; and his brothers, 5 Irving, Russell, Richard, and Edward; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETIETH GENERAL ASSEMBLY 7 OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow and regret 8 the death of Warrington Hudlin, Sr. and extend our sincere 9 condolences to his family and friends; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to his family.
