Senate Sponsors: CULLERTON Short description: FAMILY & MEDICAL LEAVE ACT Synopsis of Bill as introduced: Creates the Illinois Family and Medical Leave Act. Contains provisions similar to those in the federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, except that it applies to employers with 25 or more (instead of 50 or more) employees and some of the provisions of the Federal law pertaining to federal employees and federal matters have been deleted or changed. Effective 6 months after becoming law. HOUSE AMENDMENT NO. 1. In provisions concerning certifications by health care providers, provides that "health care provider" includes a Christian Science practitioner listed with The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Provides that, if an employee or family member is receiving treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, an employee may not object to any requirement from an employer that the employee or family member submit to examination (though not treatment) to obtain a second or third certification from a health care provider other than a Christian Science practitioner.
