91_HB0006 LRB9100354THpk 1 AN ACT to amend the School Code by adding Sections 2 10-20.8b and 34-18.18. 3 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 4 represented in the General Assembly: 5 Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections 6 10-20.8b and 34-18.18 as follows: 7 (105 ILCS 5/10-20.8b new) 8 Sec. 10-20.8b. Homework policy. 9 (a) The school board of each school district shall 10 establish and enforce a homework policy for the 1999-2000 11 school year and each school year thereafter that is 12 consistent with the requirements of this Section. Under that 13 policy, the school board shall mandate that homework be 14 regularly assigned to students. 15 (b) The policy shall recognize that homework is a 16 necessary component in the sequence of a child's education 17 and should be assigned to: 18 (1) Provide reinforcement, practice, application, 19 and enrichment of what is learned in class; 20 (2) Prepare students for class participation; 21 (3) Develop independent and responsible work and 22 study habits; 23 (4) Extend learning activities beyond the school 24 hours; 25 (5) Provide an opportunity for student creativity; 26 (6) Foster a closer relationship between home and 27 school; 28 (7) Provide opportunities for the student to gain 29 experience in the utilization of community resources; and 30 (8) Provide for positive on-going parental 31 involvement in the student's education. -2- LRB9100354THpk 1 (105 ILCS 5/34-18.18 new) 2 Sec. 34-18.18. Homework policy. 3 (a) The board of education shall establish and enforce a 4 homework policy for the 1999-2000 school year and each school 5 year thereafter that is consistent with the requirements of 6 this Section. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 27 1, 1999.
