91_HJ0001 LRB9100101JMmb 1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The arts play a vital role in Illinois, and the 3 work of the Illinois Arts Council assures that vitality; and 4 WHEREAS, Operating with its first budget increase in 9 5 years, the Illinois Arts Council is funding 1,100 arts 6 programs throughout the State but was still unable to respond 7 to more than 600 other requests for financial support; and 8 WHEREAS, Recipients of Illinois Arts Council funding 9 include schools, libraries, and art and community groups that 10 bring the arts to life for Illinoisans of all ages; and 11 WHEREAS, Illinois Arts Council support strengthens 12 programs and services of arts groups ranging from small 13 theaters to major museums, expands resident artist programs 14 in elementary and secondary schools, and creates summer art 15 apprenticeships for high school students; and 16 WHEREAS, The Illinois Art Treasures on Tour program 17 created by the Illinois Arts Council increases access to the 18 arts for residents of every region of Illinois by bringing 19 the State's art treasures to them; and 20 WHEREAS, Experience has shown that the arts stimulate the 21 State's economy by attracting tourists and businesses alike 22 and enhancing the creativity and innovative thinking of the 23 work force; therefore be it 24 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 25 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 26 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we urge the Governor to 27 increase funding of the Illinois Arts Council in the State's 28 fiscal year 2000 budget to the $14,300,000 level proposed by 29 the Illinois Arts Council, recognizing the value of the arts 30 to the people of this State; and be it further -2- LRB9100101JMmb 1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 2 presented to the Governor.
