1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans
3 will present its annual "Dante Award" on April 12, 1999; this
4 year there will be two awards presented, with one going to
5 Fran Spielman; and
6 WHEREAS, Fran Spielman is a 24-year veteran reporter for
7 the Chicago area; she began her career with WIND Radio in
8 Chicago, where she was a part-time sports reporter,
9 presenting a college football scoreboard show and morning
10 drive sports reports; from December of 1976 until late 1984
11 she covered Chicago City Hall and the mayoral careers of
12 Michael Bilandic, Jane Bryne, Harold Washington, Eugene
13 Sawyer, and Richard M. Daley; and
14 WHEREAS, Ms. Spielman shared in WIND's prestigious Edward
15 R. Murrow Award for their coverage of the 1977 Loop elevated
16 train crash; while working for WIND she also moonlighted for
17 Crain's Chicago Business; and
18 WHEREAS, Fran Spielman went to work for the Chicago
19 Sun-Times in January of 1985; she covered the Chicago Transit
20 Authority and the reign of CTA Board Chairman Michael
21 Cardilli; she also covered politics and investigated city
22 contracts under the leadership of Mayor Harold Washington;
23 she returned to reporting from City Hall in 1990; and
24 WHEREAS, Fran Spielman was a regular panelist on
25 "Time-Out", a local sports show that received two local Emmy
26 Awards; and
27 WHEREAS, Fran Spielman is a 1975 graduate of Northwestern
28 University, where she spent three years covering sports for
29 the Daily Northwestern; in her spare time she plays tennis
30 and helps her husband coach their son's little league
31 baseball team; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we congratulate Fran Spielman on being named one of the two
4 recipients of the 1999 Dante Award, presented by the Joint
5 Civic Committee of Italian Americans; and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7 presented to Ms. Fran Spielman.
