91_HR0221 LRB9106607KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Mattie Claybrook 4 Williams on her upcoming retirement as an administrator for 5 the Chicago Public Schools; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams received her Bachelor of Arts 7 degree in English from Tennessee State University, her Master 8 of Arts in Reading from DePaul University, and her Doctorate 9 in Education from Southeastern University; in addition, she 10 received a scholarship from the Chicago Board of Education 11 for an advanced study in English Language Arts at the 12 University of Pittsburgh; and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams has designed, coordinated, 14 supervised, authored, and co-authored over forty 15 publications, including curriculum materials, articles, and 16 books; she is the recipient of forty-five honors, awards, and 17 special recognitions, and will receive additional awards in 18 May of 1999; and 19 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is a member of Park Manor Christian 20 Church (Disciples of Christ), where she has been chairperson 21 of the General Board, a Sunday school teacher, Chairperson 22 of the Functional Department, and is currently serving as an 23 Elder and vice-chairperson of the Church Board; and 24 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is married to Joseph Williams and 25 they have one daughter, Stephanie; Dr. Williams also has time 26 in her busy life to be active in numerous professional, 27 religious, and community organizations; and 28 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams spent eleven years as a teacher at 29 Howland School, Mollison School, and Yale Upper Grade Center; 30 she also taught at the post-secondary and graduate levels; 31 she has spent thirty-one years as an administrator in the -2- LRB9106607KBkb 1 district and central office levels for the K-12 2 English/Language Arts program; and 3 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is the developer and initiator of 4 the concept of writing lesson plans for summer school 5 remedial programs; these programs later became a city-wide 6 summer program model for the Bridge, Making the Grade, and 7 Early Intervention programs; and 8 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams was the recipient of the 1983 15th 9 Annual Superior Public Service Award/Outstanding Executive 10 Employee Award, now known as the Osterman Award; and 11 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams developed the first city-wide 12 reading trainer-of-trainer staff development model, known as 13 the Intensive Reading Improvement Program; she initiated and 14 implemented the city-wide Young Authors Program; she 15 initiated the city-wide Spelling Bee, and secured the Chicago 16 Tribune as a sponsor so that Chicago students could attend 17 the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.; and 18 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams is the convener, coordinator, and 19 presenter of numerous workshops, conferences, and 20 professional development experiences at the local, regional, 21 and city-wide levels; she has directed, coordinated, 22 facilitated, and supervised the development of numerous 23 curricular and instructional programs; and she has served as 24 a mentor and coach for teachers and other staff throughout 25 the Chicago Public Schools; and 26 WHEREAS, Dr. Williams has proved that her retirement is 27 well deserved; she is, and has been, a hard worker and 28 dedicated part of the Chicago Public Schools; therefore, be 29 it 30 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 31 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that -3- LRB9106607KBkb 1 we congratulate Dr. Mattie Claybrook Williams on her 2 retirement; may she enjoy her well deserved time of 3 relaxation; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 5 presented to Dr. Mattie Claybrook Williams.
