91_HR0242 LRB9106494CBcbB 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Simeon Career Academy will celebrate 35 years of 3 academic excellence on Friday, April 16, 1999, at the Condesa 4 del Mar, 12220 South Cicero, from 7:00 p.m. until 12:00 a.m.; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, In December of 1963, Wescott Vocational High 7 School moved from 8023 South Normal to a new location at 8235 8 So. Vincennes Avenue, a former Kroger Factory; and 9 WHEREAS, In September of 1964, the name of the school was 10 changed to Neal F. Simeon Vocational High, and in September 11 of 1998 became Simeon Career Technical Academy; and 12 WHEREAS, Because Simeon has no boundaries, Simeon 13 students live all over the city; and 14 WHEREAS, When it comes to famous alumni, Simeon cannot be 15 topped; Assistant Principal Rodney Hull; from NBA basketball 16 star Nick Anderson to NFL football star Johnny Mitchell; in 17 the business field, Shirley A. Hiner, first Black female 18 manager investigator for Ameritech; and excelling in the 19 political arena it has State Representative Mary Flowers from 20 the 21st District and many, many more; and 21 WHEREAS, Simeon's athletic program has won many 22 sectional, city, and State championships for both boys and 23 girls; and 24 WHEREAS, Known as a sports powerhouse, Simeon is now 25 developing a reputation for academic excellence; and 26 WHEREAS, Students are talented and skilled in vocational 27 programs, and their work is on exhibit across the city; 28 students graduating from the technical programs are working 29 for large corporations who continue to pay for their advanced 30 education; and -2- LRB9106494CBcbB 1 WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Principal John E. 2 Everett the number of students receiving scholarships and 3 attending institutions of higher education has increased; in 4 the 1995 graduating class, the top five students were Black 5 males and received national recognition for their 6 accomplishments; and 7 WHEREAS, Simeon is especially proud of an 88% attendance 8 record every day; and 9 WHEREAS, After many years of need, the school has been 10 awarded a new multi-million dollar state-of-the-art facility 11 which will be constructed on the current school site and is 12 expected to be in session by 2001; therefore, be it 13 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 14 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 15 we congratulate Simeon Career Academy on 35 years of academic 16 excellence and wish them continued success in the future; and 17 be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 19 presented to Principal John E. Everett.
