1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate Annabel McBride on her
4 recent award; and
5 WHEREAS, Annabel McBride, retired entrepreneur and
6 businesswoman, was selected 1999 Woman of the Year by the
7 Marigold Chapter of the American Business Woman's
8 Association; and
9 WHEREAS, Annabel Hoffman McBride started her business
10 training in a rural one room schoolhouse in Fayette County;
11 she graduated from Vandalia High School in 1938 and enrolled
12 in Heller Beauty School in Decatur; after receiving her
13 beautician license, she opened The Hoffman Beauty Shop in
14 Mulberry Grove, Illinois; and
15 WHEREAS, Two years later she entered Brown's Business
16 College in St. Louis where she achieved certification in
17 secretarial skills, highly excelling in shorthand; she worked
18 in St. Louis 12 years as cost accountant and secretary for
19 Kelly Koett X-Ray, Lewis Invisible Stitch Sewing Machines,
20 and Universal Match Corporation; and
21 WHEREAS, In 1954 she and her husband built, owned, and
22 operated McBride's Resort, located on Bull Shoals Lake in
23 Arkansas; they established the McBride Indian Meadows Real
24 Estate business, a business specializing in subdividing land
25 and building homes; in 1973 they sold the resort and focused
26 more on their real estate business; they retired in 1986 and
27 moved to Forsythe, Missouri; and
28 WHEREAS, In the many years that Annabel lived in the
29 Arkansas and Missouri area, she kept busy with many
30 activities besides running the resort and real estate
31 business; she was active in Eastern Star, Home Extension,

1 painted and worked with ceramics, cooked numerous meals for
2 fishermen, worked as an election judge for several years,
3 worked with the church, and enjoyed reading and knitting; and
4 WHEREAS, Annabel came back to Illinois in 1991; when her
5 sister, Geri Braun, retired in 1994, the two moved to
6 Decatur; Annabel is an active member at Sunnyside Road Church
7 of Christ, the Marigold Chapter ABWA, the Macon County
8 Republican Women, an alternate member of the Moultrie County
9 Republican Women, and an election judge at Long Creek
10 Precinct 1; and
11 WHEREAS, In 1995 Annabel and her sister established the
12 Hoffman Memorial Fund at Sunset International Bible Institute
13 in Lubbock, Texas, in memory of their parents, Fred and Belle
14 Hoffman; the purpose of the scholarship fund is to help those
15 seeking education in ministry and missionary work; therefore,
16 be it
17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19 we congratulate Annabel McBride for being named the 1999
20 Woman of the Year by the Marigold Chapter of the American
21 Business Woman's Association; through her many years of hard
22 work she has proven herself an example to other women in the
23 business arena; and be it further
24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
25 presented to Annabel McBride, along with our sincere regards.
