91_HR0348 LRB9106950KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the Illinois 3 House of Representatives that the Illinois Annual Conference 4 of the Fourth Episcopal District of the African Methodist 5 Episcopal Church will hold its 128th Session in Springfield, 6 Illinois, from September 8 to September 12, 1999; and 7 WHEREAS, The now international African Methodist 8 Episcopal Church, founded in 1787 in Philadelphia, 9 Pennsylvania, by Richard Allen, is the oldest organized black 10 church; the church that was to become St. John African 11 Methodist Episcopal Church in Springfield, Illinois, was 12 established 89 years later; and 13 WHEREAS, St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, 14 which is pastored by Reverend Sammy L. Hooks and his wife, 15 Mary Hooks, the first lady of the church, is especially 16 pleased and honored to once again host the Session of the 17 Illinois Annual Conference; and 18 WHEREAS, Over 400 delegates, pastors, ministers, 19 missionaries, laymen and women, and other well-wishers are 20 expected to attend the Conference; the Conference will 21 include worship services, workshops, programs, and 22 spiritually uplifting activities and events; and 23 WHEREAS, The Conference Branch Women's Missionary Society 24 and the Conference Laymen's Organization both will meet in 25 conjunction with the Annual Conference; and 26 WHEREAS, The activities of the Conference are highlighted 27 by the Missionary Night Service, the Bishops' Annual Sermon, 28 the Expansion Service, the Youth Night, and the Ordination 29 Service; also included in this special time are visits from 30 dignitaries and guest ministers, and the appointment of 31 ministers to local charges; and -2- LRB9106950KBkb 1 WHEREAS, The Right Reverend Robert Thomas, Jr. will serve 2 as the Presiding Bishop, and his lovely wife, Beverly Thomas, 3 will serve as Supervisor of the Women's Missionary Society; 4 and 5 WHEREAS, Government works to satisfy the constructive 6 ends of society, but "except the Lord keep the city the 7 watchmen waketh but in vain"; therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 we welcome the Illinois Annual Conference of the Fourth 11 Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church 12 to Springfield, the Capital City of Illinois; may they enjoy 13 the hospitality and friendliness of Springfield during their 14 128th Session; and be it further 15 RESOLVED, That we congratulate Bishop Robert Thomas, Jr., 16 of the Conference on the occasion of the 128th Session of the 17 Illinois Annual Conference, and that we wish the Conference 18 leaders and all who attend much success in their business 19 sessions, worship services, and church related activities; 20 and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That we further congratulate St. John African 22 Methodist Episcopal Church on hosting the Conference; and be 23 it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to Bishop Robert Thomas, Jr. and Reverend Sammy L. 26 Hooks, along with our sincere regards and respect for all 27 they represent.
