91_HR0542 LRB9112664CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Quentin J. Goodwin of Chicago on Sunday, 4 January 9, 2000; and 5 WHEREAS, He was born in the village of Harlem in New York 6 City; he was educated at Talladega College in Alabama, New 7 York University, and the Brooklyn School of Law; and 8 WHEREAS, During World War II, he reached the rank of 9 captain of the United States Army, serving for five years; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, In 1950, Mr. Goodwin began his law practice in 12 New York; he moved to Chicago in 1956 to join the firm of his 13 cousin, Reginald Goodwin; he also practiced with the firm of 14 Dorothy Johnson & Associates; and 15 WHEREAS, In 1978, Mr. Goodwin served a single term in the 16 Illinois House of Representatives; he was active in the 2nd 17 Ward on the South Side, a member of Greater Bethesda Baptist 18 Church, served the Cook County and national bar associations, 19 and belonged to the Original Forty Club and King Services 20 Center; and 21 WHEREAS, In his practice, he was known for his generosity 22 and friendliness when dealing with couples seeking a divorce, 23 working with them to save their marriage; and 24 WHEREAS, His passing will be deeply felt by his family 25 and friends, especially his wife, Mercedier de Freitas; his 26 son, H. Milano Mellon; and his two granddaughters; therefore, 27 be it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we note with sorrow and regret the death of Quentin J. -2- LRB9112664CBcb 1 Goodwin and extend our sincere condolences to his family and 2 friends; and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 4 presented to his wife, Mercedier de Freitas.
