91_HR0558 LRB9109452KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, World peace has been historically a difficult 3 task to achieve for diverse reasons ranging from human 4 survival and economic exploitation to nationalism and racism, 5 creating separation, segregation, discrimination, hatred, and 6 wars; and 7 WHEREAS, The efforts to make peace a feasible and 8 achievable dream in order to make possible human cooperation 9 and unity for the sake of common welfare, individual and 10 collective development, and growth, need the vital and 11 crucial support of everyone for conflict resolution, 12 tolerance, and cooperation as the foundation of a prosperous, 13 productive, and peaceful society; and 14 WHEREAS, Peace is possible with the collective 15 participation of individuals of all races, creeds, colors, 16 ideologies, national origins, social levels, economic 17 positions, and cultural backgrounds, all in partnership with 18 religious, civic, governmental, educational, artistic, and 19 cultural institutions; and 20 WHEREAS, The United Nations, as well as religious and 21 peace activists from all over the world are united in the 22 common goal of peace, declaring the year 2000 the year of 23 world peace, in order to encourage all nations, institutions, 24 and individuals to unite in that effort; therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 27 we declare the year 2000 The Year of Individual and World 28 Peace, and start the new millennium urging people of every 29 religion, social, economic, and cultural background, national 30 origin, creed, and ideology to cooperate in the common 31 achievable goal of peace; and be it further -2- LRB9109452KBkbA 1 RESOLVED, That the State of Illinois provide incentives 2 and resources to foster educational and cultural programs to 3 promote peace, mutual understanding, conflict resolution, and 4 cultural, racial, and ethnic tolerance through public events 5 and activities for that purpose, including the creation of 6 the subject of Peace in the primary, secondary, and higher 7 education curricula; and that the State of Illinois invite 8 religious, civic, artistic, cultural, and educational 9 institutions as well as the public and private sector to 10 cooperate for the same goal; and be it further 11 RESOLVED, That the State of Illinois declare January 1, 12 2000, as well as January 1 of each year thereafter, to be 13 Peace and the Unknown Peace Maker Day, in honor of those 14 individuals who anonymously dedicate and sacrifice their 15 lives to promote peace; and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be sent 17 to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the 18 United States House of Representatives, the President 19 Pro-Tempore of the United States Senate, each member of the 20 United States Congress, each General Assembly of the fifty 21 states of the United States, each City Council in the United 22 States, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
