91_HR0583 LRB9113290CBcb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, On January 30, 2000, the St. Louis Rams, led by 3 quarterback Kurt Warner, won Super Bowl XXXIV in Atlanta, 4 Georgia, over the Tennessee Titans by the final score of 5 23-16; and 6 WHEREAS, The Rams' great on-field leader, quarterback 7 Kurt Warner, would not let adversity get in his way and led 8 the Rams to their season of greatness; and 9 WHEREAS, During his 4 years of college at Northern Iowa 10 University, Kurt Warner, even though he never got a chance to 11 play until his senior season, refused to give up on his dream 12 to play professional football and always gave 100% for the 13 team; and 14 WHEREAS, In 1994, Kurt Warner was cut by the Green Bay 15 Packers during training camp; and 16 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner then spent 3 years playing for the 17 Iowa Barnstormers in the Arena Football League; and 18 WHEREAS, During that time, Kurt Warner met his wife and 19 partner in life, Brenda Warner, who also rejected the idea 20 that Kurt give up his dream to play professional football in 21 the NFL; and 22 WHEREAS, During that period, Kurt Warner persevered by 23 working as a grocery store clerk, stocking shelves and 24 bagging groceries to help support his wife and children; and 25 WHEREAS, In 1997, Kurt Warner was signed by the St. Louis 26 Rams and spent a season playing for the Amsterdam Admirals in 27 the NFL Europe; and 28 WHEREAS, In 1998, Kurt Warner was named the third string 29 quarterback for the St. Louis Rams; and -2- LRB9113290CBcb 1 WHEREAS, In 1999, when the starting quarterback of the 2 St. Louis Rams was injured during a pre-season game, Kurt 3 Warner was thrust into the limelight and handed the reins of 4 the St. Louis Rams; and 5 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner guided the St. Louis Rams to a 13-3 6 regular season, a NFC best record; and 7 WHEREAS, In the 1999 season, Kurt Warner threw for 4,353 8 yards and 41 touchdowns, becoming only the second quarterback 9 in NFL history to throw for over 40 touchdowns in a season; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, Because of this effort Kurt Warner was named the 12 NFL's MVP for 1999; and 13 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams continued 14 their historic season by winning the NFC Western Division 15 title; and 16 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams fought on 17 against a tough opponent and won the NFC championship game 18 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, by the final score of 11-6; 19 and 20 WHEREAS, In Super Bowl XXXIV, Kurt Warner threw for 414 21 yards, a Super Bowl record, and two touchdowns; and 22 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner guided his team to the greatest 23 victory in the history of the St. Louis Rams, by winning the 24 Lombardi Trophy and Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee 25 Titans by the final score of 23-16; and 26 WHEREAS, By leading his team to victory in Super Bowl 27 XXXIV, Kurt Warner was named the Super Bowl MVP; and 28 WHEREAS, Kurt Warner, who through his hard work and 29 dedication, his never ending faith in God, his strong family 30 ties and family values, his outright refusal to quit and let -3- LRB9113290CBcb 1 life get the best of him, and his refusal to give up on 2 belief in himself and his dreams, has become a shining 3 example of leadership through adversity, and a true modern 4 day role model for all young men and women and all people of 5 the Metro East and the State of Illinois; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 7 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 8 we congratulate Quarterback Kurt Warner for a dream season 9 and a job well done; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 11 presented to Kurt Warner and the St. Louis Rams organization, 12 honoring his hard work, his great spirit of competition, and 13 his great role in the St. Louis Rams victory in Super Bowl 14 XXXIV.
