91_HR0628 LRB9113438KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The 1958-59 basketball team at L-P-O Junior 3 College was the most successful team in L-P-O's history as 4 the Apaches finished with an overall 19-6 record, and capped 5 the season with a trip to the National Junior College 6 Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas; and 7 WHEREAS, The Apache's very own half-pint guards, Bob 8 Walsh and Jim Mini, were the best outside shooters, and in 9 one tournament game remarkably scored 73 points between them; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, Along with their outstanding coach, John Strell, 12 co-captains Walsh and Mini, Irv Batten, George Pohl, John 13 Ossola, Dave Simkins, Joe DiCaroli, and John Wyzgowski 14 received honors during a special ceremony at Illinois Valley 15 Community College, formerly known as L-P-O, on January 22, 16 2000; and 17 WHEREAS, WLPO's Lanny Slevin introduced each former team 18 member before a packed gymnasium of proud families, friends, 19 and fans prior to the I.V.C.C. basketball game against the 20 College of DuPage; and 21 WHEREAS, Both Bob Walsh and Jim Mini still shine forty 22 years later as they reminisce about the days when they could 23 turn any deficit into a game-winning situation by playing 24 smart and shooting from the outside, tallying only two points 25 per shot, since the three-point rule was not yet in the 26 books; and 27 WHEREAS, Bob Walsh and Jim Mini displayed extraordinary 28 charisma as if nothing has changed between them, as they 29 smiled and humbly accepted recognition for holding major 30 records at L-P-O; Jim Mini holds personal records in scoring 31 48 points in a game, 633 points in a season, and 1,172 points -2- LRB9113438KBkb 1 in a career; and 2 WHEREAS, Bob Walsh holds the career high personal record 3 for shooting percentage at 47.7%, and a career low for the 4 fewest fouls at 49; and 5 WHEREAS, These records remind us of the grace, 6 discipline, and hard work put forth by Jim Mini and Bob Walsh 7 to become both basketball stars and stars in life; and 8 WHEREAS, Today Dr. Jim Mini is a successful medical 9 doctor in DuPage County; Bob Walsh is a successful insurance 10 salesman at Suarez and Associates in Peru; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 12 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 13 we congratulate Jim Mini, Bob Walsh, Coach Strell, and the 14 entire 1958-1959 men's basketball team at L-P-O Junior 15 College for providing memories and showing true 16 sportsmanship; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 18 presented to Bob Walsh and Jim Mini.
