91_HR0693 LRB9113592KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Being a teacher takes determination, and a 3 willingness to motivate students so that what they have 4 learned stays with them throughout their lives; and 5 WHEREAS, Teaching is an underappreciated profession, yet 6 we all remember those teachers that changed our lives or made 7 a difference; and 8 WHEREAS, Mark Challand was one such teacher; Mr. Challand 9 taught fourth grade at Shabbona Elementary School for 20 10 years; according to the staff, Mr. Challand touched the lives 11 of over four hundred children that passed his way; and 12 WHEREAS, Mark Challand was a graduate of the Shabbona 13 school system; he received his Associate in Arts degree from 14 Kishwaukee Community College and his Bachelors degree from 15 Northeast Missouri State; and 16 WHEREAS, In 1979 he started as a library aide and then 17 began his career as a fourth grade teacher; he especially 18 enjoyed teaching science, and it became his speciality; he 19 taught the students poetry, and had them memorize poems; he 20 changed the students' ways of thinking about stereotypes by 21 having the girls construct models while the boys learned to 22 sew; and 23 WHEREAS, Mark Challand was insistent that the students 24 learn about the history of the State of Illinois; he enjoyed 25 teaching his students about the beginnings of our State, and 26 the many interesting people, places, and events that have 27 been a part of the story of Illinois; and 28 WHEREAS, Mrs. Jean Giesecke, the mother of Mark Challand, 29 will receive her wish to see the State flag flying in his 30 honor under the flag of the United States on the flagpole 31 located at Shabbona Elementary School, a tribute to her son -2- LRB9113592KBkb 1 and his love for the history of the State of Illinois; 2 therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 4 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 5 we mourn the death of Mark Challand, along with all that 6 knew, loved, and were blessed with learning from him; and be 7 it further 8 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 9 presented to his mother, Mrs. Jean Giesecke.
