91_HR0932 LRB9114208KBkbA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The Chicago Crusader newspaper was started in 3 1940 by the team of Balm L. Leavell and Joseph H. Jefferson; 4 the newspaper was an organ of the Negro Labor Relations 5 League with the intent to fight employment discrimination in 6 the City of Chicago; and 7 WHEREAS, In 1961 Dorothy Leavell, the current editor of 8 the Chicago Crusader, joined forces with the founding 9 crusaders; she began her career as an intern at the newspaper 10 in the summer of 1961 and seven years later became publisher 11 after the death of Balm Leavell; and 12 WHEREAS, The Chicago Crusader newspaper celebrated sixty 13 years of committed service to the City of Chicago on June 9, 14 2000; this day also marked thirty-nine years of dedicated 15 service from Dorothy Leavell; and 16 WHEREAS, The Chicago Crusader is recognized as one of the 17 City of Chicago's leading institutions and is one of the 18 oldest and most successful Black-owned businesses in the 19 nation; therefore, be it 20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 21 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 22 we congratulate Dorothy Leavell, the dedicated staff, and the 23 many readers of the Chicago Crusader, as together they 24 celebrate the newspaper's sixtieth anniversary; we wish 25 Dorothy Leavell and the staff continued success as they go 26 into the next sixty years, serving as a vital part of the 27 City of Chicago; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 29 presented to Dorothy Leavell, editor of the Chicago Crusader.
