91_HR0972 LRB9115172RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to recognize the year 2000 as the 4 Jubilee Year of Christianity; and 5 WHEREAS, A jubilee year is a year of release marking the 6 end of seven sabbatical years, in which debts were to be 7 forgiven, people set free, and the land restored; and 8 WHEREAS, The Sabbath year and the jubilee were both 9 reminders that all we have comes not by our own designs but 10 by the gracious hand of a loving Creator; and 11 WHEREAS, The Jubilee year begins with the Day of 12 Atonement to express sorrow for transgressions and prayers 13 for forgiveness; and 14 WHEREAS, The Jubilee year is a time when glad tidings are 15 brought to the lowly, healing to the broken-hearted, liberty 16 to the captives, release to the prisoners, and comfort to 17 those who mourn; and 18 WHEREAS, The United States has been founded upon the 19 principle of freedom for all people; it has proclaimed the 20 principle of justice and strives to make justice available to 21 all in our laws and in our courts; it also seeks peace among 22 the nations of the world and, aware of its responsibilities 23 among nations, promotes progress and development throughout 24 the world; and 25 WHEREAS, The people of the United States, aware of the 26 vastness of our land and the treasure of our resources, seek 27 to preserve the beauty of creation and the necessary 28 stewardship of our resources; and 29 WHEREAS, The people of the United States, aware of past 30 transgressions in our history and seeking reconciliation -2- LRB9115172RHrh 1 among all peoples, are dedicated to the principle of One 2 Nation under God; therefore, be it 3 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 4 NINETY-FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 5 we recognize the Jubilee Year of Christianity for its 6 contributions to the principles upon which this country was 7 founded; that we rededicate ourselves to the principles that 8 are found in the Year of Jubilee; that we commend the 9 religious communities that have sought to preserve the 10 traditions of jubilee that have been handed down to them; and 11 that conscious of our common humanity, we commit ourselves to 12 greater stewardship of what has been given to us to preserve 13 and protect.
