91_SR0138 LRB9106882KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, This year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of 3 the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus; and 4 WHEREAS, The Republic of Cyprus has been divided and 5 occupied by foreign forces since 1974, in violation of United 6 Nations resolutions; and 7 WHEREAS, The international community and the United 8 States government have repeatedly called for the speedy 9 withdrawal of all foreign forces from the territory of 10 Cyprus; and 11 WHEREAS, There are internationally acceptable means to 12 resolve the situation in Cyprus, including the 13 demilitarization of Cyprus and the establishment of a 14 multinational force to ensure the security of both 15 communities in Cyprus; and 16 WHEREAS, A peaceful, just, and lasting solution to the 17 Cyprus problem would greatly benefit the security, and the 18 political, economic, and social well-being of all Cypriots, 19 as well as contribute to improved relations between Greece 20 and Turkey; and 21 WHEREAS, The United Nations has repeatedly stated the 22 parameters for such a solution, most recently in United 23 Nations Security Council Resolution 1218, which was adopted 24 on December 22, 1998, with United States support; and 25 WHEREAS, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218, 26 adopted on December 22, 1998, calls for reduction of tensions 27 in the island, through a staged process aimed at limiting and 28 then substantially reducing the level of all troops and 29 armaments in Cyprus, ultimately leading to the 30 demilitarization of the Republic of Cyprus; and -2- LRB9106882KBkb 1 WHEREAS, President Clinton wholeheartedly supported 2 resolution 1218 and committed himself to taking all necessary 3 steps to support a sustained effort to implement the 4 resolution; therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we endorse President 7 Clinton's commitment to undertake significant efforts in 8 order to promote substantial progress towards a solution to 9 the Cyprus problem in 1999; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to each member of the Illinois congressional 12 delegation.
