 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are  saddened
 3    to  learn of the death of Hugh Lorenzo Key, Jr., who recently
 4    passed away; Mr. Key was born on  April  24,  1941,  to  Hugh
 5    Lorenzo  Key,  Sr., and Helen Mae Key in Mounds, Illinois; he
 6    accepted  Jesus  Christ  as  his  Savior  at  the  West  Side
 7    Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Reverend Dr.
 8    Ronald L. Bobo, Sr.; and

 9        WHEREAS, Hugh Lorenzo "Lo" Key, Jr., moved  to  East  St.
10    Louis  in  1942  with  his  family; he attended John Robinson
11    Elementary School, Washington Elementary School, Hughes Quinn
12    Junior High School, and Lincoln Senior High School, where  he
13    was one of the school's popular football players; he attended
14    Parson  College,  then  transferred  to Lincoln University in
15    Jefferson City, Missouri, where he met  his  wife,  Lola  Mae
16    Brit;  he  graduated  with  a  Bachelor  of Science degree in
17    Elementary Education in 1967; and

18        WHEREAS, Hugh Lorenzo Key, Jr., and Lola Brit were united
19    in marriage on December 27, 1964 at the West Side  Missionary
20    Baptist Church; and

21        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Key  began  a  teaching  career  at Euclid
22    Elementary School, then became a teacher in  School  District
23    189;  he  taught  at  Garrison,  Brown,  and Neely Elementary
24    Schools, and also coached elementary softball  teams  for  22
25    years;  while  he  was teaching he was also learning, earning
26    his Master's degree in Education and an Advanced  Certificate
27    from   the  University  of  Illinois;  he  also  received  an
28    Administrative and Supervisory Certificate and Superintendent
29    Endorsement from the University of Illinois; and

30        WHEREAS, Mr.  Key  received  many  honors  for  teaching,
31    including:  the  Apple  for the Teacher in 1991 from Iota Phi
32    Lambda Sorority, Inc. in  St.  Louis;  the  Outstanding  Team

 1    Worker  Busch  Stadium  Award  in  1989;  and the 25 years of
 2    Service Award from East St. Louis  Pan  Hellenic  Council  in
 3    1999;  Lorenzo  Key  also  belonged  to  many  organizations,
 4    including:  Kappa  Alpha  Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Life member),
 5    Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity (Professional  Organization),  the
 6    Lincoln  University Alumni Association (Life member), and the
 7    East  St.  Louis,  Illinois  Pan  Hellenic  Council   (former
 8    President); and

 9        WHEREAS,  Hugh Lorenzo Key, Jr., is survived by his wife,
10    Lola; his children, Rhonda Key, Hugh (Danielle) Key III,  and
11    Wynee  (Donald)  Hayes;  his  mother,  Helen Key; his sister,
12    Audrey Moore;  his  brother,  Michael  (Gwendolyn)  Key;  his
13    aunts,  Mrs.  Elizabeth  Smith  and  Mrs.  Maggie Jordan; his
14    uncles, James Williams, Haywood Williams, and Elder Williams;
15    his mother and father-in-law, Leomia and Anthony Harrell; his
16    sisters-in-law, Edna (Jerry) Davis, Joan Harrell, Vera Ennis,
17    Shirley   Harrell,   and   Pauline   (A.D.)   Williams;   his
18    brother-in-law, Roy (Carolyn) Harrell; his  special  cousins,
19    Patricia  Blakney and Arthur Kinnel; and many other relatives
20    and friends; therefore, be it

21        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL
22    ASSEMBLY  OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
23    his family and friends, the death of Hugh Lorenzo  Key,  Jr.;
24    and be it further

25        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
26    presented to the family of Hugh Lorenzo Key, Jr.
