 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
 3    of the death of James C. Murray, a  retired  appellate  court
 4    judge,  former congressman, and former Chicago city alderman,
 5    on Tuesday, October 19, 1999; and

 6        WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Chicago's Southwest Side,
 7    most recently of the Beverly  community,  he  served  in  the
 8    United  States  Army Air Corps during World War II; following
 9    this, he served as an assistant  Illinois  attorney  general;
10    and

11        WHEREAS,  He  was  elected  to the United States House of
12    Representatives from  Illinois'  3rd  District  in  1954  and
13    served  until  1956;  in 1957, he was elected alderman of the
14    18th Ward on the Southwest Side, serving until 1967; and

15        WHEREAS, While alderman in 1966, he drafted and sponsored
16    the city's first fair-housing ordinance; and

17        WHEREAS, From 1968 to 1969, he served as first  assistant
18    state's  attorney  in Cook County; in 1970, he was elected to
19    serve as a Cook County Circuit Court judge; and in  1984,  he
20    was  appointed  to  the  Illinois  appellate  court, where he
21    served until he retired from the bench in 1994; and

22        WHEREAS, After retiring from the bench, Judge Murray  was
23    appointed  by  Mayor  Richard M. Daley to serve on the city's
24    police board and on the zoning board of appeals; and

25        WHEREAS, He was preceded in  death  by  his  first  wife,
26    Marie Rose, who died in 1974, after 34 years of marriage; and

27        WHEREAS,  His  passing  will be deeply felt by his family
28    and friends, especially his wife of 22 years, Florence  "Sis"
29    Murray;  his  sons,  James,  Jr.,  Stephen,  and Michael; his
30    brothers, Robert Murray and the Honorable Michael Murray; and

 1    12 grandchildren; therefore, be it

 2        RESOLVED, BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST  GENERAL
 3    ASSEMBLY  OF  THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note with sorrow
 4    and regret the death of Judge James C. Murray and extend  our
 5    sincere condolences to his family and friends; and

 6        RESOLVED,  That  suitable  copies  of  this resolution be
 7    presented to Judge Murray's widow, Florence "Sis" Murray, and
 8    his sons, James, Jr., Stephen, and Michael.
