91_SR0201 LRB9109285CBcb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn 3 of the death of Mother Agnes of Jesus, O.C.D., on Thursday, 4 October 28, 1999; and 5 WHEREAS, She was the founder and longtime leader of the 6 Monastery of St. Joseph Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Des 7 Plaines; and 8 WHEREAS, She was 90 years old when she died; in August of 9 1998 she celebrated her 70th anniversary as a cloistered nun; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, She was born in Jessup, Pennsylvania, on January 12 25, 1909, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Costello, the 13 youngest of nine children, all of whom have preceded her in 14 death; and 15 WHEREAS, She entered the religious life in 1928, after 16 hearing a talk by the Rev. Fulton Sheen, who later became 17 archbishop; Mother Agnes was moved by his description of the 18 quiet, contemplative life that is the hallmark of the 19 Carmelite order; and 20 WHEREAS, She entered the Carmelite order in New Albany, 21 Indiana; the nuns were later relocated to Indianapolis, where 22 she later would be chosen prioress; in 1947, she founded 23 another monastery in Terre Haute; and 24 WHEREAS, After serving in Indiana for 30 years, Mother 25 Agnes founded a Carmelite monastery in Des Plaines at the 26 invitation of Cardinal Samuel Stritch; the monastery was the 27 first group of Carmelite nuns in Illinois; and 28 WHEREAS, The life and service of Mother Agnes of Jesus 29 are a shining example of the love of God to all people; 30 therefore, be it -2- LRB9109285CBcb 1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mark with sadness 3 the death of Mother Agnes of Jesus and extend our sincere 4 condolences to the Monastery of St. Joseph Discalced 5 Carmelite Nuns; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to the Monastery of St. Joseph Discalced Carmelite 8 Nuns in Des Plaines.
