 1                          SENATE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS, The members of the Senate were saddened to learn
 3    of the death of Ms. Hagar Baskin Harris of Chicago  on  April
 4    14, 2000; and

 5        WHEREAS, Hagar Baskin Harris was born in Chicago on April
 6    8,  1934,  the  daughter of Ruby L. Baskin and Daniel Baskin;
 7    and

 8        WHEREAS, Ms. Hagar Baskin Harris was  employed  with  the
 9    Brezler  Ice Cream Company and later retired from the Chicago
10    Park District (Altgeld Park) after more than twenty years  of
11    service; and

12        WHEREAS,  Ms.  Harris was a community activist, active in
13    Chicago politics, the YMCA, the Manley  Upper  Grade  Center,
14    the Gang Youth Center, and Monti Paul Center among many other
15    inner-city youth groups on Chicago's West Side; and

16        WHEREAS,  Ms.  Harris  was  a  devout  Catholic and was a
17    member at St. Francis Cabrini, Our Lady of  the  Angels,  and
18    St. Malachy in Chicago; and

19        WHEREAS,  A  loving  mother,  and devoted grandmother and
20    great-grandmother, Ms. Harris was commonly known as "Granny";
21    and

22        WHEREAS, Ms. Harris was preceded in  death  by  her  son,
23    Otis W. Harris, and her sister, Glory D. Jackson; and

24        WHEREAS,  Ms.  Harris' passing will be deeply felt by her
25    family  and   friends,   especially   her   daughters,   Ruby
26    Crosby-Harris,  Ureida  Slaughter,  Lanna  L.  Willis-Harris,
27    Glory  Harris-Lynch,  and  Estoria  Harris;  her sons, Leslie
28    Harris, Sr., Conrad Harris, Sr.,  Darryl  Harris,  and  Erick
29    Harris; her sisters, Ann Miller and Gwen Baskin-Williams; her
30    brothers,  Ishmael Baskin; Leslie Baskin-Bey, Sr., and Daniel

 1    Baskin, Jr.; her nephews, raised as sons, Samuel D.  Jackson,
 2    Leslie  Baskin-Bey,  Jr., and Nathaniel R. Baskin-Bey; her 27
 3    grandchildren; her 16  great-grandchildren;  and  a  host  of
 4    other relatives and friends; therefore, be it

 5        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  SENATE  OF  THE  NINETY-FIRST GENERAL
 6    ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we note  with  sorrow
 7    and  regret  the  death of Hagar Baskin Harris and extend our
 8    sincere condolences to her family  and  friends;  and  be  it
 9    further

10        RESOLVED,  That  suitable  copies  of  this resolution be
11    presented to the family of Hagar Baskin Harris.
