91_SR0420 LRB9115010KBkb 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Michael T. "Mike" Mersch of Park Ridge, Illinois, who 5 recently passed away; and 6 WHEREAS, Mike Mersch grew up in Skokie with his six 7 sisters and two brothers; he began his life-long love of 8 hockey when he began playing hockey with the Niles Sharks at 9 the age of seven; and 10 WHEREAS, Mike Mersch attended Notre Dame High School in 11 Niles, where he was named the most valuable player of the 12 hockey team his senior year; he is also a member of the Notre 13 Dame High School athletic hall of fame; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Mersch attended the College of DuPage and 15 the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he played hockey 16 at both institutions; he was drafted by the National Hockey 17 League team the Calgary Flames in 1986; during his time with 18 the Flames he helped lead the farm team, the Salt Lake Golden 19 Eagles, to the Turner Cup championship; he was traded to the 20 Pittsburgh Penguins and played for the Flint Spirits and the 21 Muskegon Lumberjacks, who he helped win the Turner Cup 22 championship in the 1988-1989 season; and 23 WHEREAS, Mike Mersch retired in 1990 and married his high 24 school sweetheart, Nancy Davies; he began coaching hockey 25 teams in Niles, where he led teams to three consecutive title 26 runs and many championship finals; he also led power skating 27 clinics and taught many local young people how to skate; and 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Mersch coached the Park Ridge Express Mite 29 Bronze travel team in the 1999-2000 season, and saw the team 30 win their first championship in more than twenty years; and 31 WHEREAS, The passing of Michael Mersch will be felt by -2- LRB9115010KBkb 1 all who knew him, especially his wife, Nancy; his children, 2 Michael, Natalie, and Dominick; his parents, Robert and Mary 3 Mersch; as well as other family members, friends, and the 4 many children whose lives he touched; therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 7 all who knew him, the death of Michael "Mike" Mersch of Park 8 Ridge, Illinois; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 10 presented to the family of Michael Mersch.
