91_SR0454 LRB9115153RHrh 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to 3 express their sincere condolences to the family and friends 4 of Howard J. Burns, who passed away November 19, 2000; and 5 WHEREAS, Howard J. Burns was born December 6, 1927 in 6 Ipava to Howard John and Florence Burns; and 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Burns was raised in Dwight and served in the 8 United States Navy from 1945 to 1947 aboard President 9 Truman's yacht, the USS Williamsburg; and 10 WHEREAS, Howard Burns earned a bachelor's degree from 11 Illinois State University; he relocated to Moweaqua to begin 12 his teaching career in industrial arts in 1951, and continued 13 his own education with a master of arts degree from Colorado 14 State University in 1959; he retired from teaching in 1989; 15 he was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in 16 Moweaqua; and 17 WHEREAS, Mr. Burns co-founded Moweaqua Boy Scout Troop 85 18 in 1955 and served as Scoutmaster for 45 years until his 19 death; his many recognitions in Scouting include Wood Badge, 20 District Award of Merit, St. George Award and the Silver 21 Beaver; he also served Scouting as Scoutmaster of three 22 jamboree troops and once on jamboree staff and many council 23 committees; he has helped over 60 boys reach the rank of 24 Eagle Scout in Moweaqua; and 25 WHEREAS, Howard Burns other memberships include: Rotary 26 Club, American Legion and lifetime honorary membership of the 27 Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers; as a trustee of 28 the Moweaqua Township Park Board, he was instrumental in the 29 planning and development of the new North Park; and 30 WHEREAS, In 1969, Howard Burns was honored for community 31 service with "Howard Burns Day" in Moweaqua; and -2- LRB9115153RHrh 1 WHEREAS, The passing of Howard Burns will be deeply felt 2 by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Caren; 3 his children, Anne Marie Roeper (husband, Michael), Mark 4 Burns (wife, Melanie) and David Burns (partner, Rick 5 Maloney); his grandchildren, Heather, Brittany, Carter and 6 Trenton; his brothers Robert Burns (wife, Cathy) and Richard 7 Burns (wife, Joan); his sister Rita Verdun; his in-laws 8 Patricia Collins, Alice Perryman (husband, Sam),and Bill 9 Newman (wife, Linda); and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Burns will always be fondly remembered as a 11 devoted husband, father, grandfather and distinguished 12 community leader; he has touched the lives of many youth 13 through his years as teacher and Scoutmaster, therefore, be 14 it 15 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIRST GENERAL 16 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with 17 all who knew him, the death of Howard J. Burns of Moweaqua, 18 Illinois; and be it further 19 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 20 presented to the family of Howard J. Burns.
