92_HB2634eng HB2634 Engrossed LRB9202174NTsb 1 AN ACT in relation to education. 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 3 represented in the General Assembly: 4 Section 5. The Children and Family Services Act is 5 amended by changing Section 8 as follows: 6 (20 ILCS 505/8) (from Ch. 23, par. 5008) 7 Sec. 8. Scholarships and fee waivers. 8 (a) Each year the Department may select from among the 9 children under care, or children formerly under care who have 10 been adopted or are in the subsidized guardianship program, a 11 maximum of 48 students (at least 4 of whom shall be children 12 of veterans) who have completed 4 years in an accredited high 13 school; the children selected shall be eligible for 14 scholarships and fee waivers which will entitle them to 4 15 consecutive years of community college, university, or 16 college education. Selection shall be made on the basis of 17 scholastic record, aptitude, and general interest in higher 18 education. In accordance with this Act, tuition scholarships 19 and fee waivers shall be available to selectedsuchstudents 20 at any university or college maintained by the State of 21 Illinois. The Department shall provide maintenance and 22 school expenses, except tuition and fees, during the academic 23 years to supplement the selected students' earnings or other 24 resources so long as they consistently maintain scholastic 25 records which are acceptable to their schools and to the 26 Department. Selected students may attend other colleges and 27 universities, if scholarships are awarded them, and receive 28 the same benefits for maintenance and other expenses as those 29 selected students attending any Illinois State community 30 college, university, or college under this Section. 31 (b) If the student is not selected for a scholarship and HB2634 Engrossed -2- LRB9202174NTsb 1 fee waiver under subsection (a) of this Section, the student 2 is eligible for a scholarship that entitles the student to 8 3 semesters or 12 quarters of full payment of tuition and 4 mandatory fees at a public institution of higher education, 5 as defined under the Board of Higher Education Act, if the 6 student is admitted to the institution. 7 (Source: P.A. 90-608, eff. 6-30-98.)
