 1        AN ACT in relation to criminal law.

 2        Be  it  enacted  by  the People of the State of Illinois,
 3    represented in the General Assembly:

 4        Section 5.  The Illinois Dangerous Animals Act is amended
 5    by changing Sections 0.1 and 1  and  adding  Section  1.5  as
 6    follows:

 7        (720 ILCS 585/0.1) (from Ch. 8, par. 240)
 8        Sec.  0.1.   As  used  in  this  Act,  unless the context
 9    otherwise requires:
10        "Dangerous animal" means a lion, tiger, leopard,  ocelot,
11    jaguar,   cheetah,   margay,  mountain  lion,  lynx,  bobcat,
12    jaguarundi, bear, hyena, wolf or coyote, or any poisonous  or
13    life-threatening reptile.
14        "Owner"  means any person who (a) has a right of property
15    in a dangerous animal,  (b)  keeps  or  harbors  a  dangerous
16    animal,  (c)  has a dangerous animal in his care, or (d) acts
17    as custodian of a dangerous animal.
18        "Person"  means  any   individual,   firm,   association,
19    partnership,  corporation,  or other legal entity, any public
20    or  private  institution,  the  State  of  Illinois,  or  any
21    municipal corporation or political subdivision of the State.
22        "School"  means   a   public   or   private   pre-school,
23    elementary, or secondary school.

26        Sec.  1.   No  person  shall have a right of property in,
27    keep, harbor, care for, act as custodian of  or  maintain  in
28    his  or  her  possession  any  dangerous  animal  except at a
29    properly  maintained  zoological  park,  federally   licensed
30    exhibit,  circus,  scientific  or  post-secondary educational

 1    institution,  research  laboratory,  veterinary  hospital  or
 2    animal refuge in an escape-proof enclosure.

 5        Sec. 1.5. Dangerous animals; schools.   No  person  shall
 6    have  a  right of property in, keep, harbor, care for, act as
 7    custodian of  or  maintain  in  his  or  her  possession  any
 8    dangerous  animal within 2,500 feet of any school building or
 9    the real property comprising a school.
