1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Korean War has played an important part in
3 American history, and the veterans of the Korean War have
4 earned the respect and admiration of all people; and
5 WHEREAS, An armed conflict began in June of l950 and
6 ended in July of 1953; it exacted a heavy toll: 33,629
7 Americans were killed in action and 20,617 died of injuries
8 or disease; and
9 WHEREAS, The Korean War began when the United Nations
10 urged UN members to repel the Communist aggressors in Korea;
11 in July of 1950 the UN Security Council recommended that
12 member nations contributing to the defense of South Korea
13 make their troops available to a unified command headed by
14 the United States; and
15 WHEREAS, It is appropriate for us to remember the many
16 sacrifices and contributions to the cause of freedom made by
17 the outstanding men and women who served in the Korean War;
18 and
19 WHEREAS, There are bridges on Illinois Route 51 in
20 Decatur, Macon County, Illinois, known as Route 51 Bridge
21 Number 058-0010 Northbound and Bridge Number 058-0049
22 Southbound; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
24 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
25 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that in recognition of the 50th
26 Anniversary of the Korean Conflict, Route 51 Bridge Number
27 058-0010 Northbound and Bridge Number 058-0049 Southbound be
28 named Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge; and be it further
29 RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
30 is requested to erect, at suitable locations consistent with
31 State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs

1 giving notice of the name; and be it further
2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 delivered to the Illinois Secretary of Transportation.
