92_HJ0077 LRB9216767BHbh 1 HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Travel and tourism is one of America's largest 3 service exports providing a trade surplus of $7 billion last 4 year, and it is one of the nation's largest employers with a 5 total of 18 million jobs, that is one in every seven people; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, Including the $90 billion spent in the U.S. by 8 international visitors, travel and tourism generated $545 9 billion last year, providing $94.4 billion in tax revenue to 10 local, state, and federal governments; and 11 WHEREAS, The travel and tourism industry supports the 12 vital interests of Illinois, contributing to our employment, 13 economic prosperity, international trade and relations, 14 peace, understanding, and goodwill; and 15 WHEREAS, Travel and tourism ranks as one of Illinois 16 largest industries in terms of revenues generated; and 17 WHEREAS, 80.1 million travelers visited Illinois 18 contributing $23.7 billion to the economy in our State; and 19 WHEREAS, Travel and tourism provided employment for 20 669,100 people in Illinois, generating a payroll of $14.7 21 million; and 22 WHEREAS, As people throughout the world become more aware 23 of the outstanding cultural and recreational resources 24 available in Illinois and the United States, travel and 25 tourism will become an increasingly important aspect in the 26 lives of our citizens; and 27 WHEREAS, Given these laudable contributions to the 28 economic, social, and cultural well being of the citizens of 29 Illinois, it is fitting that we recognize the importance of 30 travel and tourism; and -2- LRB9216767BHbh 1 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 2 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE 3 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that May 4 through 12, 2002, is 4 hereby designated the 19th Annual Celebration of National 5 Tourism Week, and the Governor of Illinois is requested to 6 issue a proclamation calling upon the people of Illinois to 7 observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and activities; 8 and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 10 presented to Governor George Ryan.
