92_HR0062 LRB9207535RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are please to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen, an American government teacher 6 at Zion-Benton Township High School, was the recent recipient 7 of the Veterans of Foreign War's "Voice of Democracy" Teacher 8 of the Year for the State of Illinois award; and 9 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen received his undergraduate 10 education in political science at Harvard University and 11 Illinois State University, and he earned graduate degrees 12 from Illinois State University and the University of 13 Illinois; and 14 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen, prior to his arrival at 15 Zion-Benton Township High School, organized and taught at an 16 Illinois Law Enforcement Commission school for juvenile 17 offenders in Bloomington, Illinois; he has taught in the 18 State of Illinois for thirty-three years of which the last 19 twenty years have been at Zion-Benton Township High School; 20 and 21 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen was appointed by Governor James R. 22 Thompson as a Commissioner on the Illinois Juvenile Justice 23 Commission and served in that capacity for ten years; and 24 WHEREAS, For the past twenty-five years, Bruce Hansen has 25 sponsored programs honoring United States Veterans; his 26 students have consistently placed well in essay and 27 oratorical contests sponsored by the Veteran of Foreign Wars 28 as well as many other veteran organizations; in 1994, his 29 students won one statewide oratorical competition and placed 30 second in the American Legion's statewide contest; and 31 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen has gone beyond the duties and -2- LRB9207535RHrh 1 expectations when it comes to the influence he has had on his 2 students; he has continuously given of himself to assist his 3 students to accomplish one solitary goal, to learn; he has 4 taught GED classes two nights a week in addition to his 5 teaching schedule at Zion-Benton Township High School; he 6 always finds time to work with the students on special 7 projects, like the Voice of Democracy; he has also sponsored 8 fund-raising activities for the students as well as a trip to 9 see the inauguration of the President of the United States; 10 his most recent fund-raising event was for funds to purchase 11 a bronze statue of the flag-raising event on Iwo Gima for 12 Zion-Benton Township High School; and 13 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen recently hosted a half-hour show 14 where he interviewed local veterans on what Veteran's Day 15 meant to them; he has been instrumental in many activities 16 involving honor to veterans; and he has worked closely with 17 the high school's Jr. ROTC program; and 18 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen has been a member of the Illinois 19 Federation of Teachers since its inception at Zion-Benton 20 Township High School; he has served as a member of the 21 negotiating team at Zion-Benton and as the Legislative 22 Chairman of the Lake County Federation of Teachers; and 23 WHEREAS, Bruce Hansen and his wife, Sally, happily reside 24 in Lake Zurich, Illinois; therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 27 we congratulate Bruce Hansen for being the recipient of the 28 Veteran of Foreign War's "Voice of Democracy" Teacher of the 29 year award for the year 2001, and for his dedication in the 30 field of teaching and beyond; and be it further 31 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 32 presented to Bruce Hansen as an expression of our esteem. -3- LRB9207535RHrh
