92_HR0078 LRB9207959KBkb 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Carl Koerner, Jr., who passed away 5 on January 20, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Carl Koerner was born on December 10, 1926 in 7 East St. Louis, Illinois; his parents were Carl P. and Ann 8 Koerner; Mr. Koerner served as a military policeman in the 9 United States Army during World War II; in 1961 Mr. Koerner 10 and his family moved to Effingham, beginning his community 11 service to the town; and 12 WHEREAS, Carl Koerner was the chairman and founder of 13 Koerner Distributor Inc. of Effingham, Carterville, Centralia 14 and New Baden; he was also the owner and director of K & M 15 Floral Shoppe Inc. and Effingham Marina Inc.; and 16 WHEREAS, For almost 40 years, Carl P. Koerner, Jr. 17 dedicated himself to improving the quality of life in the 18 Effingham area through his participation in civic 19 organizations, including being a member of the St. Anthony's 20 Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and chairperson of the 21 St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Foundation; a member of the 22 St. Anthony Home and School Association, St. Anthony Booster 23 Club, Effingham Knights of Columbus, Effingham Country Club, 24 Greater Effingham Chamber of Commerce & Industry Industrial 25 Affairs Committee, St. Anthony's Hospital Planning 26 Commission, St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital Advisory Council, 27 Effingham County Youth Commission, and Effingham Unit 40 28 Board Referendum Committee; past president and a member of 29 the Eastern Illinois University Panther Club; a member of the 30 Eastern Illinois University Executive Council and 31 President's Club; a member of Eastern Illinois University's 32 Board of Trustees and chairman; and a member of the Effingham -2- LRB9207959KBkb 1 Catholic Charities Board of Directors, the Effingham Kiwanis 2 Club, the Effingham Jaycees, and every St. Anthony schools' 3 ad hoc committee; and 4 WHEREAS, Mr. Koerner has received numerous awards for his 5 community service, including the posthumous Effingham Daily 6 News 2001 Citizen of the Year award, the 1996 ARC Community 7 Support Systems Family of the Year, the 1987 St. Anthony 8 Booster Club Recognition Award, membership in the Eastern 9 Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985, the 10 Eastern Illinois University Panther Club Most Valuable Player 11 in Fundraising Efforts, the Eastern Illinois University 1984 12 Glen Hesler Award, and recognition for past contributions at 13 the 2000 Catholic Charities Dinner; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Koerner received many work-related awards, 15 including the Rotary Club Vocational Excellence Award, the 16 Seagram Tribute to Achievement Award, the Greater Effingham 17 Chamber of Commerce & Industry EXCEL Award, the Business and 18 Ethics and Social Improvement Award from Eastern Illinois 19 University Lumpkin College of Business, the Stroh Brewery 20 Proud Lion Award of Excellence, the Hiram Walker & Sons 21 President's Award, and the W.A. Taylor Drambule Award of 22 Merit; and 23 WHEREAS, Mr. Koerner was a supporter of Catholic 24 Charities, St. Anthony schools, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic 25 Church, Unit 40 schools, Eastern Illinois University, St. 26 Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham school sports, and 27 many other community projects; and 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Koerner was considered a liaison between the 29 City of Effingham and Springfield government; his friendships 30 and connections with State leadership often helped open up 31 discussions for projects like the Raney Street overpass and 32 extension that benefitted the Effingham area; and -3- LRB9207959KBkb 1 WHEREAS, The passing of Carl P. Koerner, Jr. will be 2 deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his 3 wife, Carolyn; his sons, Phil (wife, Carla) and Paul (wife, 4 Kay); his daughter, Lynn Radford; his sister, Rita (husband, 5 John) Baird; his nine grandchildren; and the many people in 6 the City of Effingham whose lives were touched by his 7 generosity; therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Carl P. 11 Koerner, Jr. of Effingham, Illinois; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to the family of Carl P. Koerner, Jr. with our 14 sincere condolences.
