1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to congratulate the management and staff
4 of the The Dixon Telegraph as they celebrate the 150th
5 anniversary of the newspaper; and
6 WHEREAS, The Dixon Telegraph and Herald was formed in
7 1851; Benjamin F. Shaw and Charles Fisk joined together to
8 form the newspaper; in 1856 Mr. Shaw, along with 11 other
9 newspaper editors, formed the Republican Party in Illinois to
10 address the slavery issue; and
11 WHEREAS, Eustace E. Shaw, Benjamin F. Shaw's son, and his
12 wife, Mabel S. Shaw, continued the family business; after
13 Eustace Shaw's death, his wife became the driving force of
14 the newspaper; together with her sons, George, Benjamin, and
15 Robert E. Shaw, Mabel Shaw formed the Shaw Newspaper Group,
16 purchasing newspapers in Illinois and Iowa; and
17 WHEREAS, B. Douglas Shaw, son of Benjamin Shaw, served as
18 the CEO of the Shaw Newspaper Group until his death in 1993;
19 his son, Thomas D. Shaw, now serves as President and CEO;
20 another son, Ben D. Shaw, serves on the Board of Directors;
21 Eustace K. Shaw, the son of Robert E. Shaw, serves as
22 Chairman of the Board; two of his sons, William E. and Robert
23 A. Shaw, serve as publishers of Sauk Valley Newspapers in
24 Dixon/Sterling and Northwest Newspapers in Crystal Lake; and
25 WHEREAS, The Shaw Newspaper Group operates 25 newspaper
26 publications in Illinois and Iowa; therefore, be it
27 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
28 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
29 we congratulate the Shaw Newspaper Group and The Dixon
30 Telegraph on 150 years of presenting news to the people of
31 the Dixon area; and be it further

1 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2 presented to Thomas D. Shaw, President and CEO of the Shaw
3 Newspaper Group.
