92_HR0228 LRB9208723JMmbB 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, One of this State's most dedicated and 3 personable leaders of local government, Euvon Mapes Radel, is 4 retiring as supervisor of Sonora Township in Hancock County 5 after decades of public service; and 6 WHEREAS, Euvon Mapes Radel, farmer and mother of four 7 children, set out to become active in local government in 8 1973 by going door to door in a harvest gold pick-up truck, 9 talking to voters, and enlisting support for her candidacy as 10 supervisor of Sonora Township; and 11 WHEREAS, In the spring of 1973, she was elected to her 12 first four-year term as supervisor, and she was re-elected in 13 the six successive elections; and 14 WHEREAS, Sonora Township has seen many changes since the 15 1970's, when town meetings were conducted in Euvon Radel's 16 kitchen because the weather was either too hot or too cold to 17 use the town hall; and 18 WHEREAS, These monthly, in-home meetings featured 19 discussion and dessert, and while they were not without 20 diverse opinion and were not always harmonious, they provided 21 a good perspective on the local government and encouraged the 22 compromises necessary among local elected officials to reach 23 their goals on a limited budget; and 24 WHEREAS, The 1970's brought development to the township 25 with annual federal revenue sharing, which provided much 26 needed financial assistance for the replacement of bridges on 27 all of the creeks leading to the Mississippi River; and 28 WHEREAS, In the 1980's, several unused roads were closed 29 and Sonora Town Hall was renovated with new siding, new storm 30 windows, a lower ceiling, a new door, and electric heaters 31 for those cold election nights; and -2- LRB9208723JMmbB 1 WHEREAS, During that decade, Euvon Mapes Radel was an 2 active participant of the multi-township as a governmental 3 entity; and 4 WHEREAS, The 1990's brought a renewed interest in a new, 5 long-term home for Sonora Town Hall, with the locating of 6 land for a forty-year lease to begin the new century; and 7 WHEREAS, The millennium will bring a new building for 8 town meetings and a shop and storage facility for the 9 township road grader and truck; and 10 WHEREAS, One of Euvon's favorite duties as supervisor has 11 been assisting with elections, including reminding people to 12 vote, getting election materials, and providing cinnamon 13 rolls, milk shakes, and dinner for those hard working 14 election judges; and 15 WHEREAS, While serving Sonora Township for four decades, 16 Euvon Radel has worked with two county clerk's, Roscoe 17 McDaniel and Kerry Asbridge, whom she has truly admired for 18 their diligence, hard work, and patience as election 19 officials; therefore, be it 20 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 21 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 22 we congratulate Euvon Mapes Radel upon her retirement as 23 supervisor of Sonora Township in Hancock County, expressing 24 our appreciation of a career dedicated to public service at 25 the most vital, grass-root level and commending her to every 26 citizen of Illinois who knows that local government is the 27 bulwark of democracy; and be it further 28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 29 provided to Euvon Mapes Radel.
