92_HR0255 LRB9208767RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Rayna Miller, who passed away on 5 March 29, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Rayna Goldberg Miller was born on February 17, 7 1928 in Chicago, Illinois; she was a graduate of Senn High 8 School in Chicago and the National College of Education in 9 Evanston; she served as a teacher at the University of 10 Chicago Lab School and at Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago, 11 and later as a substitute teacher in the Wilmette school 12 system; and 13 WHEREAS, Rayna Goldberg Miller married Marvin Miller in 14 1952; and 15 WHEREAS, Both Rayna Miller and her husband, Marvin, 16 Miller, were actively involved in civic affairs in Wilmette; 17 Mrs. Miller earned a reputation as an effective activist for 18 civil rights and fair housing; she began her career as an 19 activist with the League of Women Voters, where she gained 20 training in governmental processes; in the early 1960's, she 21 joined the fight against housing discrimination, and was a 22 part of the regional fair-housing effort in 1965, known as 23 the Summer Project, that concluded with a visit by Martin 24 Luther King Jr. to Winnetka's Village Green; and 25 WHEREAS, Mrs. Miller's work continued through the 1970s 26 and 1980s and led to the establishment of the Interfaith 27 Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs; she became director 28 in 1975; the group, which consisted of a coalition of 29 churches and synagogues, worked on affordable housing for 30 seniors and minorities; they also supported efforts to 31 develop senior housing building such as Gates Manor in the 32 Wilmette Village Center and Shore Line Place; and -2- LRB9208767RHrh 1 WHEREAS, The passing of Rayna Miller will be deeply felt 2 by all who knew and loved her, especially her husband, Marvin 3 Miller; her family; her friends; and the Wilmette community 4 who will remember her for her dedicated and inspiring work to 5 her community; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 7 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 8 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Rayna 9 Miller of Wilmette, Illinois; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 11 presented to the family of Rayna Miller with our sincere 12 condolences.
