 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish to express their sincere condolences to
 4    the family and friends of Stanislaw "Stanley" Dobrzycki,  who
 5    passed away on March 17, 2001; and

 6        WHEREAS,  Stanislaw Dobrzycki was born on July 5, 1921 in
 7    Kurki, Poland; and

 8        WHEREAS, On September 1, 1939, two weeks after World  War
 9    II  began,  Stanislaw  Dobrzycki  and  his entire family were
10    arrested and imprisoned for several months by  Soviet  forces
11    invading from the east; in February of 1940, they were herded
12    in freight cars to the Soviet gulags in Siberia; and

13        WHEREAS,  On  March  3,  1942, after the Soviets switched
14    alliances, Mr. Dobrzycki volunteered with the 3rd  Carphatian
15    Division,  First  Artillery,  22nd Brigade of the Polish Free
16    Army in the Qastina Camp in the  former  U.S.S.R;  under  the
17    command  of General Kopanski, the Polish Free Army was formed
18    and moved westward to join the British Command in April 1942;
19    Mr. Dobrzycki's unit was victorious in an attack on  May  19,
20    1944  on  the  mountaintop  monastery of Monte Cassino, where
21    German forces had cut off the  route  to  Rome  and  Northern
22    Italy;  the  victory  opened  a  route  to  Allied forces; in
23    addition to Monte Cassino,  he  also  fought  at  Ancona  and
24    Bolonia before being evacuated to England and discharged as a
25    lieutenant; and

26        WHEREAS,  Stanislaw  Dobrzycki  was  awarded  the  Polish
27    Army's  Bronze  Cross  of  Merit with swords and the Cross of
28    Monte Cassino, battle stars for 1939 to 1945 from the British
29    Army along with the Star of  Italy,  Defense  Medal  and  war
30    medals  from  1939  through 1945; he was recently awarded the
31    Golden Battle Cross of Honor by the minister  plenipotentiary
32    at  the  Republic of Poland's consulate in Chicago, Illinois;

 1    and

 2        WHEREAS, Mr. Dobrzycki returned to Italy in 1994 for  the
 3    50th  anniversary  of the battle at Monte Cassino and visited
 4    the cemetery where his comrades were buried; and

 5        WHEREAS, After living in  England  for  many  years,  Mr.
 6    Dobrzycki  moved  to  Chicago  in  1950, where he married his
 7    wife, Danuta, a third-year medical student,  and  settled  on
 8    the  northwest  side; he worked as a precision tool maker for
 9    Glenbard Tool of Anister Brothers; and

10        WHEREAS, Mr.  Dobrzycki  was  very  active  in  Chicago's
11    Polish-American  community;  he  was  a  member in the Polish
12    National Alliance Lodge 771, president of the PNA and  Polish
13    American Congress; he also served as a member of the Siberian
14    Society of the USA, the Polish Carphatian Society of America,
15    the  Polish American Numismatics Association, and the Polonus
16    Philatelic Society; in addition  he  served  as  an  election
17    judge for many years; and

18        WHEREAS,  Mr.  Dobrzycki  was an avid stamp collector; he
19    also put together an exhibit honoring musician and statesman,
20    Ignacy Paderewski that earned him international honors; and

21        WHEREAS, The  passing  of  Stanislaw  Dobrzycki  will  be
22    deeply  felt  by  all  who knew and loved him, especially his
23    wife, Danuta "Donna" Dobrzycki; his sons, Mark Dobrzycki  and
24    Chris   (wife,   Agnieszka)  Dobrzycki;  his  sister,  Sabina
25    Chmielewski; his  brother,  Jerzy  Dobrzycki;  and  his  many
26    relatives  in  Poland  and  Chicago's  South and North Sides;
27    therefore, be it

28        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
29    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
30    we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of Stanislaw
31    Dobrzycki, of Harwood Heights, Illinois; and be it further

 1        RESOLVED,  That  a  suitable  copy  of this resolution be
 2    presented to the  family  of  Stanislaw  Dobrzycki  with  our
 3    sincere condolences.
