92_HR0288 LRB9208837RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln became the 3 stepmother of ten year old Abe Lincoln in 1819; and 4 WHEREAS, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln recognized the great 5 potential in young Abe encouraging and teaching Abe to read; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, It is in large measure due to the loving 8 guidance and nurturing support of Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln 9 that young Abe developed into a man of high ideals and 10 character with the confidence to pursue bold initiatives 11 reflecting the values and personal integrity imparted by his 12 mother; and 13 WHEREAS, The outstanding leadership of Abraham Lincoln 14 moved the divided and warring states to become the United 15 States of America; and 16 WHEREAS, Not only is Abraham Lincoln one of the greatest 17 Presidents of the United States, but he has been established 18 through generations as one of the most highly respected world 19 leaders in history; and 20 WHEREAS, The invaluable contributions of Sarah Bush 21 Johnston Lincoln serve as a model to the importance of strong 22 and loving families and the significant influence of parents 23 as the first teachers of children; and 24 WHEREAS, The profound and loving influence of Sarah Bush 25 Johnston Lincoln has not received sufficient recognition for 26 her significant contribution in guiding Abraham Lincoln to a 27 man of historical influence on the fabric of American life, 28 reflecting the dignity of all peoples; therefore, be it 29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 30 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that -2- LRB9208837RHrhA 1 we urge all persons and committees involved in the planning 2 of the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library to include an 3 appropriate tribute that adequately recognizes the 4 contributions of Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln to the life and 5 development of Abraham Lincoln forever changing the course of 6 history.
