92_HR0309 LRB9208812RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in 4 the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Paul Korman is 6 retiring from his duties as UAW Region 4 Director on June 1, 7 2001; and 8 WHEREAS, Paul Korman was born on April 27, 1935 in 9 Chicago, Illinois; he is a graduate of Harrison Technical 10 School and attended the Illinois Institute of Technology; and 11 WHEREAS, Paul Korman has been a UAW member for nearly 12 forty-six years and has held various leadership positions; he 13 was elected director of UAW Region 4 on June 14, 1995, at the 14 UAW Constitutional Convention in Anaheim, California; he had 15 previously served as Assistant Director of UAW Region 4 since 16 1984, and he served for sixteen years on the Region 4 staff 17 as an international representative; and 18 WHEREAS, Paul Korman has been a member of the UAW since 19 1955, when a certification election at International 20 Harvester Company brought the members of the Farm Equipment 21 Workers including FE Local 101, in which Mr. Korman was a 22 member, into the UAW; he quickly became involved in UAW Local 23 1301, representing his fellow workers at the International 24 Harvester Tractor Works in Chicago; he served as a shop 25 steward, a member of the local union executive board, and a 26 member of the Local 1301 Negotiating Committee; after the 27 closing of the International Harvester Plant and Local 1301, 28 Mr. Korman transferred his membership to UAW Local 1643 in 29 Libertyville, Illinois; and 30 WHEREAS, Paul Korman is a veteran skilled tradesperson 31 who holds a UAW journeyman's card as a millwright; in -2- LRB9208812RHrh 1 addition he holds an electrician's certification from the 2 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and 3 WHEREAS, From 1968 through 1984, Paul Korman carried out 4 servicing responsibilities involving UAW members at 5 International Harvester, Caterpillar, J I Case, Dresser, and 6 a number of aerospace and auto industry suppliers and 7 independent plants; from 1966 until his appointment as an 8 international representative, he served the UAW on temporary 9 assignments; and 10 WHEREAS, Paul Korman has been active in politics for 11 several years; he served as a member of the Illinois 12 Democratic Party and has worked on behalf of a number of 13 Democratic candidates in Illinois campaigning for the United 14 States Senate and other seats; he is also a member of the 15 NAACP; and 16 WHEREAS, Paul Korman currently serves as a member of the 17 Board of Directors of Navistar Corporation and as a member of 18 the Advisory Board of the Federal Reserve Bank; and 19 WHEREAS, Paul Korman will spend his retirement in Gurnee, 20 Illinois with his very proud and loving family, who include 21 his wife, Sandra, his children, Paul and Loretta, and his 22 four grandchildren; and 23 WHEREAS, The Korman family pride themselves on being part 24 of the UAW family; Paul's father, Paul Korman, Sr., and his 25 father-in-law, Willard Klepser, are retired members of UAW 26 Local 1301 from the former Harvester facility; therefore, be 27 it 28 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 29 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 30 we congratulate Paul Korman on his retirement as UAW Region 4 31 Director and for his dedicated service to UAW for forty-six -3- LRB9208812RHrh 1 years and we wish him well in all of his future endeavors; 2 and be it further 3 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 4 presented to Paul Korman as an expression of our esteem.
