92_HR0329 LRB9208959RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of former Illinois State Senator Frank 5 Savickas, who passed away on May 14, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Senator Frank Savickas was the first member of 7 Lithuanian extraction to be elected to the House of 8 Representatives where he served from 1967 through 1971 and 9 the Senate where he served from 1971 through 1992; and 10 WHEREAS, Senator Frank Savickas grew up on the Southwest 11 Side of Chicago in a heavily Lithuanian community; he 12 attended Wilson College and once ran for United States 13 Congress in the early 1980s; he also served as a Merchant 14 Marine; and 15 WHEREAS, Senator Frank Savickas rose through the ranks to 16 become chairman of the Senate Labor Committee and as 17 assistant majority leader; he was also a committeeman in 18 Chicago's 15th Ward; and 19 WHEREAS, Senator Frank Savickas was also appointed by 20 Mayor Richard M. Daley to a leadership position at Midway 21 Airport; and 22 WHEREAS, Senator Frank Savickas was known in the House 23 and Senate as a champion of the causes of senior citizens and 24 the handicapped and disabled; Senator Savickas is considered 25 the father of the legislation which gave the disabled the 26 right to be educated; and 27 WHEREAS, In addition, Senator Frank Savickas was known as 28 a champion for the working class and was the primary sponsor 29 of legislation that increased criminal penalties for crimes 30 against the elderly in the mid 1980s; and -2- LRB9208959RHrh 1 WHEREAS, The passing of Senator Frank Savickas will be 2 deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his 3 wife, Pam; his children, Michael, Linda, Sharon, Margaret, 4 Angela, and Bianca; and his many friends and colleagues in 5 the Illinois General Assembly; therefore, be it 6 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 7 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 8 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of former 9 State Senator Frank Savickas of Venice, Florida; and be it 10 further 11 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 12 presented to the family of former State Senator Frank 13 Savickas with our sincere condolences.
