1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone
4 achievements in the history of high schools in the State of
5 Illinois; and
6 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Whitney Young
7 High School placed first in the Illinois Academic Decathlon
8 held at Malcolm X College last March; and
9 WHEREAS, For the 16th year in a row, Whitney Young High
10 School won the State contest scoring 45,452 points out of a
11 possible 60,000 points; since 1987, the magnet school has
12 placed among the top 10 schools in the country; and
13 WHEREAS, The State finals was a culmination of regional
14 contests that weeded out hundreds of schools throughout the
15 State; the students participating are a cross-section of
16 average to honors students hoping to represent the State in
17 the National Decathlon competition in Alaska this June; and
18 WHEREAS, In addition, Whitney Young High School also
19 placed third during the United States Academic Decathlon this
20 year with many outstanding performances by its team members;
21 and
22 WHEREAS, The members of the Whitney Young High School
23 Decathlon team include Megan Wachspress, Marianne Tarcor,
24 Olivia Tarcor, John Henry Gonzalez, Cynthia Wong, Jeremy
25 Aquila, Rensise Buenviaje, Scott Meyers, and Ken Morris; the
26 members were coached by Brian Tennison and Susanne McCannon;
27 and
28 WHEREAS, The members of the Whitney Young High School
29 Decathlon team have displayed outstanding sportsmanship and
30 dedication not only to their school, but also to their
31 community and to the citizens of the State of Illinois;

1 therefore, be it
2 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4 we congratulate Whitney Young High School on their
5 outstanding performances at the Illinois Academic Decathlon
6 and the United States Academic Decathlon; and be it further
7 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
8 presented to Coaches Brian Tennison and Susanne McCannon and
9 to each member of the Whitney Young High School Decathlon
10 team as an expression of our esteem.
