 1                          HOUSE RESOLUTION

 2        WHEREAS,  The  members   of   the   Illinois   House   of
 3    Representatives  wish to express their sincere condolences to
 4    the family and friends of Dorothea Inez  Austin,  who  passed
 5    away on January 28, 2001; and

 6        WHEREAS, Dorothea Inez Austin was born on August 31, 1911
 7    in Covington, Virginia; she was the daughter of the late Rev.
 8    J.C.  Austin, Sr. and the sister of the late Rev. J.L. Austin
 9    Jr.; and

10        WHEREAS, Dorothea  Austin  was  recognized  as  a  gifted
11    musician,  poet,  writer  and lecturer; she was a fashion and
12    style trendsetter who was once regarded as one  of  the  true
13    beauties  of  her  time; she was widely known for giving well
14    attended  fashion  shows,  teas,  and  promoting   successful
15    concerts  and  musicals; she organized several choirs and was
16    an accomplished musician on both the organ and piano; and

17        WHEREAS,  Dorothea  Austin's  King  Drive  home  was  the
18    gathering  place  for  celebrities   and   leaders   of   the
19    Bronzeville community; many important decisions affecting the
20    Black  community  in  Chicago  were made as a result of these
21    gatherings; and

22        WHEREAS, Dorothea Austin devoted her entire  life's  work
23    to  the  church;  she  was  a  75  year member of the Pilgrim
24    Baptist Church in Chicago; and she received many  awards  and
25    honors  for  her  community  service  and  commitment for her
26    involvement with the church; and

27        WHEREAS, The passing of  Dorothea  Inez  Austin  will  be
28    deeply  felt  by  all  who knew and loved her, especially her
29    daughter, Paulene Austin-Keller; and  her  many  friends  and
30    acquaintances  who have admired her dedication and commitment
31    to her life's ambitions; therefore, be it

 1        RESOLVED,  BY  THE  HOUSE  OF  REPRESENTATIVES   OF   THE
 2    NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
 3    we  mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Dorothea
 4    Inez Austin of Chicago, Illinois; and be it further

 5        RESOLVED, That a suitable  copy  of  this  resolution  be
 6    presented   to   Paulene   Austin-Keller   with  our  sincere
 7    condolences.
