92_HR0479 LRB9210122RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of the Reverend Martin B. Mangan, who 5 passed away on September 14, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Rev. Mangan was born on December 12, 1929 in 7 Springfield, Illinois to Martin B. and Marie M. Mangan; he 8 attended Mundelein Seminary and was ordained on May 1, 1957; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, During his career, Rev. Mangan served as an 11 assistant to St. Joseph Church in Granite City from 1957 to 12 1958 and was a student of canon law at Gregorian University 13 in Rome from 1958 to 1961; he served as Vice-Chancellor, 14 Chancery, in Springfield from 1961 to 1968 and as Pastor of 15 St. Joseph Church in Granite City from 1968 to 1972; he was 16 Co-Administrator at St. Mary's Church in Taylorville from 17 1972 to 1977 and Administrator of St. Mary's Church in Mt. 18 Sterling from 1977 to 1979; he served as Pastor of Holy 19 Family Church in Mt. Sterling from 1979 to 1981, St. Paul's 20 Church in Highland and St. James Church in St. Jacob from 21 1981 to 1986, Forty Martyrs Church in Tuscola from 1986 to 22 1991, and St. James Church in Decatur from 1991 to 1997; in 23 addition, he served as Dean at Decatur Deanery from 1991 to 24 1996 and had been serving as Priest-Moderator at St. James 25 Church from 1997 to 2001; and 26 WHEREAS, Rev. Mangan was an outspoken proponent of social 27 justice issues, including workers' rights, human rights, race 28 relations, gender equality, war and peace, and the disparity 29 between rich and poor; he served as a central figure for the 30 past 10 years at St. James Catholic Parish and School and was 31 an icon for organized labor in Decatur; and 32 WHEREAS, Rev. Mangan was recently honored by the Decatur -2- LRB9210122RHrhA 1 Trades & Labor Assembly, AFL-CIO; the Father Martin Mangan 2 Humanitarian Award will in the future be presented to 3 individuals who best exemplify Rev. Mangan's commitment to 4 social justice issues and workers' rights; and 5 WHEREAS, The passing of the Reverend Martin Mangan will 6 be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his 7 sisters, Mary Patricia Sullivan and Elizabeth Ann Finzer; his 8 many nieces and nephews; and the many parishioners at St. 9 James Catholic Church, where his presence will be deeply 10 missed; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 12 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 13 we mourn, along with all who knew him, the death of the 14 Reverend Martin Mangan of Decatur, Illinois; and be it 15 further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 17 presented to the family of the Reverend Martin Mangan with 18 our sincere condolences.
