1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to recognize the accomplishments
4 of the citizens of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Steven M.
6 Powell, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 881 of the United Food
7 and Commercial Workers International Union was recently
8 awarded the prestigious "Rerum Novarum" Award by His Eminence
9 Francis Cardinal George, the Archbishop of Chicago; and
10 WHEREAS, The "Rerum Novarum", written by Pope Leo XIII in
11 1891 at the dawn of the American Labor Movement, affirmed the
12 dignity of workers and legitimized the vital role of emerging
13 labor unions to spur a just society; and
14 WHEREAS, The "Rerum Novarum" became the foundation for
15 the advancement of organized labor in the United States and
16 around the World; and
17 WHEREAS, The "Rerum Novarum" called on the clergy of the
18 Roman Catholic Church to support the goals of organized labor
19 in securing respect for workers; and
20 WHEREAS, Steven M. Powell has dedicated his professional
21 life to ensuring the rights and dignity of all workers are
22 upheld; therefore, be it
23 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
24 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
25 we congratulate Steven M. Powell on being awarded the 2001
26 "Rerum Novarum"; and be it further
27 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
28 presented to Steven M. Powell as an expression of our esteem.
