92_HR0565 LRB9211074RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, A remnant of the 1870 Forest Plantation remains 3 at the University of Illinois' Urbana-Champaign campus; and 4 WHEREAS, This remnant, called Illini Grove, stands at the 5 corner of Lincoln and Pennsylvania Avenues; and 6 WHEREAS, In the 19th century, Professor T. J. Burrill 7 established the field of Plant Pathology with his research in 8 the Plantation, evaluating tree growth and survival on 9 prairie soils demonstrating potential productivity; and 10 WHEREAS, Today this area is a highly valued green space 11 with a variety of trees, some as old as 130 years - a very 12 rare condition on the bustling Urbana-Champaign campus; and 13 WHEREAS, As a boy, Senator Stanley Weaver played in the 14 Plantation and he has many pleasant memories of this wood; in 15 1963, Senator Weaver and his wife signed a petition to 16 prevent further development of buildings in this area; 17 therefore, be it 18 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 19 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 20 we wish the remnant of this forest, known as Illini Grove, to 21 remain forever open, green and wooded space, as natural as 22 possible; and be it further 23 RESOLVED, That we urge the Department of Natural 24 Resources and the University of Illinois to permanently and 25 prominently place a bronze plaque at Illini Grove, declaring 26 it to be a testimonial to Senator Stanley Weaver and his late 27 wife, Mary Smith Weaver, for their life-long dedication to 28 preserving nature; and be it further 29 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 30 presented to the Director of the Department of Natural -2- LRB9211074RHrhA 1 Resources and to the President of the University of Illinois.
