92_HR0596 LRB9212210RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, After graduating from Loras College in Dubuque, 3 Iowa, David M. Peterson of Skokie, Illinois began his 4 teaching career at LeMoyne Upper Grade Center in the Chicago 5 Public School system in 1965; and 6 WHEREAS, David Peterson joined the staff of the Chicago 7 Teachers Union in 1972 as a field representative and went on 8 to become its lobbyist and the Assistant to the President for 9 Legislation and Technical Projects in 1975, a position he 10 held for 26 years; and 11 WHEREAS, David Peterson married Pamelyn Massarsky in 1986 12 and is the father of Kristen, Andrew, Gretchen, and Eric 13 Peterson, and the grandfather of Taylor and David Peterson; 14 and 15 WHEREAS, David Peterson has held a multitude of elected 16 and appointed positions in the Chicago Teachers Union and the 17 Illinois Federation of Teachers, including area vice- 18 president, executive board member, IFT vice-president and 19 convention delegate at numerous conventions of the Illinois 20 Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of 21 Teachers; and 22 WHEREAS, David Peterson has served as the Chicago 23 Teachers Union's chief lobbyist since 1975 and played a major 24 role in improving public education and the professional 25 livelihood of Chicago Teachers Union members during those 26 years, including the passage of collective bargaining rights 27 for teachers and paraprofessionals, numerous pension 28 improvements, and several major funding initiatives including 29 the creation of the School Finance Authority which dealt with 30 the severe funding crisis of Chicago Public Schools in 1979; 31 and -2- LRB9212210RHrh 1 WHEREAS, There are few people known for their personal 2 and professional generosity more than David M. Peterson, as 3 witnessed by many legislators, lobbyists and Springfield 4 restaurateurs over the course of his career; and 5 WHEREAS, David Peterson retired from the Chicago Teachers 6 Union on June 30, 2001, after a total of 29 years of service; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, The many friends and colleagues of David 9 Peterson will miss his friendship, support, and regular 10 presence in the Capital City greatly; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 12 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 13 we congratulate David M. Peterson for his many years of 14 service with the Chicago Teachers Union, appreciate the 15 dedication to public education and his members that 16 exemplified his career, and wish him the long and happy 17 retirement that he richly deserves; and be it further 18 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 19 presented to David M. Peterson.
