92_HR0602 LRB9211698RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives wish to express their sincere condolences to 4 the family and friends of Mother Ada Turner, who passed away 5 on November 29, 2001; and 6 WHEREAS, Mother Ada Turner was born in 1921 in Hennings, 7 Tennessee; she was the mother of fourteen children and became 8 the spiritual mother to many prison inmates at the Menard 9 Correctional Center; and 10 WHEREAS, Mother Ada Turner began a Volunteer Prison 11 Ministry with the Illinois Department of Corrections at the 12 Menard Correctional Center on September 1, 1963, and served 13 for 38 years, which was reported to be the longest volunteer 14 service record in the department; and 15 WHEREAS, Mother Ada Turner made regular visits to the 16 Menard Correctional Center to lead worship service and 17 minister to her "sons" by scripture, song, testimony, prayer, 18 preaching, pen pal correspondence, and by the love of Jesus 19 each man saw in her face; the individuals she ministered to 20 returned to society changed, many of them finding jobs, 21 providing for their family, and becoming preachers and 22 Christian workers; and 23 WHEREAS, In 1993, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar cited 24 Mother Ada Turner for her 30 years of volunteer service; she 25 was recognized for her prison ministry by Illinois Department 26 of Corrections Directors, Wardens, and Chaplains, as well as 27 Church of God in Christ Bishops and the Church's National 28 Womens Auxiliary; in addition, her prison ministry was 29 featured in a television documentary in St. Louis; therefore, 30 be it 31 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE -2- LRB9211698RHrh 1 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 2 we mourn, along with all who knew her, the death of Mother 3 Ada Turner; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 5 presented to the family of Mother Ada Turner with our sincere 6 condolences.
