92_HR0655 LRB9213612RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS. Peter G. Hastings, Principal of Onahan 3 Elementary School on Chicago's great Northwest Side, has 4 announced his retirement after three decades as an 5 outstanding teacher and administrator; and 6 WHEREAS, A graduate of Concordia College in Minnesota 7 (B.A.) Northeastern Illinois University (M.A.) with 8 postgraduate work at Loyola University and Northeastern 9 Illinois, Peter G. Hastings began his teaching career at 10 Wicker Park Elementary School in 1962; he remained there two 11 years, then was transferred to Sabin Elementary, where he 12 taught seven years and served as Acting Assistant Principal 13 in 1967 and again in 1971; and 14 WHEREAS, Peter G. Hastings served as Assistant Principal 15 and then Principal of Peterson Elementary School from 1971 16 until 1982; under his caring and informed guidance, the 17 students there flourished intellectually and ultimately 18 developed into outstanding citizens; from 1982 to 1989, he 19 brought the same high standards as Principal of Norwood Park 20 Elementary School and William J. Onahan Elementary School; 21 the latter has claimed his sole attention since 1989; he is 22 currently fulfilling his third consecutive four-year contract 23 as Principal at Onahan Elementary School; and 24 WHEREAS, A brilliant Chicagoan mindful of his civic 25 duties, Peter G. Hastings has long been a vital presence in 26 his community; he is a member of the Norwood Park Historical 27 Association since 1995, a School Coordinator in the Norwood 28 Park Clean and Green Neighborhood Program since 1990, and 29 throughout his long career as an educator has maintained 30 memberships in many outstanding community and civic 31 organizations; and 32 WHEREAS, Peter G. Hastings is a member of the Illinois -2- LRB9213612RHrh 1 Principal's Association, the Chicago Principal's Association 2 and the Illinois Reading Association; he holds many awards 3 and recognitions, most prominently and most recently (2000) 4 the Distinguished Educator Award from the Chicago Academy for 5 School Leadership; and 6 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives is cognizant of the 7 great debt owed those in whose capable hands we place our 8 most valuable resource: our children; and 9 WHEREAS, It is fervently hoped that in his well-deserved 10 retirement, Peter G. Hastings will be able to spend quality 11 time with his lovely wife, Carol, their son, Robert, 12 daughter, Elizabeth (Gregory) Mackey, and grandson, Erik; 13 therefore, be it 14 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 15 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 16 we do hereby extend our gratitude and our congratulations to 17 Peter G. Hastings on his retirement after thirty years of 18 outstanding public service as an astute and dedicated 19 educator; and we extend to him and his family our best wishes 20 for continuing happiness and fulfillment; and be it further 21 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 22 presented to Peter G. Hastings as an expression of our 23 esteem.
