92_HR0710 LRB9216233BHbh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are 3 proud to recognize those citizens of the State of Illinois 4 who have exerted a profound and guiding influence on their 5 fellow people; and 6 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Pedtke, who exhibited her fine moral 7 and civic leadership through her determination to have racial 8 harmony in the schools and community, graduated from the 9 University of Illinois in June, 1947; in a joint agreement 10 with the Centralia High School and Centralia Junior College, 11 she taught at both schools beginning in September of 1947; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Pedtke became the Dean of the Girls at 14 Centralia High School and the Dean of Women at Centralia 15 Junior College in 1956; in 1962, she became full-time at 16 Centralia Junior College and, in 1965, full-time at Kaskaskia 17 College; and 18 WHEREAS, Dr. Pedtke was the first Director of Students in 19 the Community College Systems for state colleges; and 20 WHEREAS, Dr. Pedtke and the late Linda Jones wrote the 21 Higher Education Collegiate Association (HECA) grant for 22 academic and personal enrichment for minority students in 23 1989; this grant allowed minority students to visit several 24 different colleges in hopes of aiding them to further their 25 education; many students benefited from this experience, thus 26 enabling them to take advantage of the many scholarships 27 available; HECA was approved in 1989 for $30,000, 1990 for 28 $40,000, and 1991 for $40,000; and 29 WHEREAS, Dr. Pedtke created a Minority Advisory Council 30 in 1989, which was formed to meet the needs of the minority 31 community through education and/or outreach locations; and -2- LRB9216233BHbh 1 WHEREAS, The Minority Banquet at Kaskasia College was 2 endorsed 13 years ago by Dr. Dorothy Pedtke, and the 13th 3 annual Minority Banquet was held on February 21, 2002, with 4 guest speaker Roland Burris; and 5 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Pedtke retired after 45 years in 6 education, but is still the epitome of love and harmony among 7 the races; therefore, be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 9 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 we congratulate Dr. Dorothy Pedtke for her loving and guiding 11 influence; and be it further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to Dr. Dorothy Pedtke as an expression of our 14 esteem.
