92_HR0744 LRB9216345BHbhB 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are proud to recognize those citizens that 4 have made valuable contributions in ministry to their 5 community; and 6 WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Pastor of 7 Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, was born in 8 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. 9 Wright, Sr. and Dr. Mary Henderson Wright; and 10 WHEREAS, Pastor Wright, Jr. attended Virginia Union 11 University in Richmond, Virginia, where his parents and 12 grandparents attended; after six years in the military, 13 Pastor Wright transferred to Howard University where he 14 completed his undergraduate studies and received his first 15 Master's Degree; his second Master's Degree was from the 16 University of Chicago Divinity School; Pastor Wright received 17 his Doctorate from the United Theological Seminary under Dr. 18 Samuel DeWitt Proctor; and 19 WHEREAS, In addition to Pastor Wright's four earned 20 degrees, he has been the recipient of three honorary Doctor 21 of Divinity Degrees, a Doctor of Letters Degree (from Colgate 22 University) and a Doctor of Laws Degree from Bethune-Cookman 23 College; and 24 WHEREAS, When Pastor Wright was called to serve the 25 congregation of Trinity United Church of Christ in March of 26 1972, the membership was 87 adults; since that time, the 27 membership has grown to over 8000 members with two new 28 worship centers added; and 29 WHEREAS, Trinity Church has also constructed two Senior 30 Citizen Housing complexes which provide comfortable living 31 quarters for 130 families; the Trinity Church has operated a -2- LRB9216345BHbhB 1 Federally Funded Child Care Program for low-income and 2 unemployed families for a quarter of a century and has also 3 run a federally funded Credit Union for 25 years with assets 4 exceeding $2,000,000; and 5 WHEREAS, Pastor Wright and Trinity Church have supported 6 missions in Ghana, West Africa and in Durban, South Africa 7 for over a decade; the Church opened a Computer School in 8 Saltpond, Ghana in the summer of 2000; and 9 WHEREAS, Under Paster Wright's leadership, 35 seminary 10 graduates have been ordained to the Christian Ministry and 29 11 students are presently enrolled in fully accredited 12 seminaries, preparing themselves for full time ministry; and 13 WHEREAS, Pastor Wright's personal, pastoral, and ministry 14 philosophy have been shaped by his mother and father, who 15 showed him by their living what the gospel of Jesus Christ 16 really means; he now shares those lessons with his wife, 17 Ramah Reed Wright, his four daughters, his son, and his three 18 grandchildren; therefore, be it 19 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 20 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 21 we congratulate the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. on 22 his profound and guiding influence on the people of his 23 community and around the world; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 25 presented to the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. as an 26 expression of our esteem.
