92_HR0760 LRB9216505RHrhA 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The institution of marriage is one of the 3 cornerstones upon which our society is built, and a marriage 4 that has achieved a notable longevity is truly a model for 5 the people of the State of Illinois; and 6 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Mr. and Mrs. 7 Melvin Powell of Chicago, Illinois, will celebrate the 8 fortieth anniversary of their marriage on April 20, 2002; and 9 WHEREAS, Melvin and Dian Powell have a long and 10 distinguished history of dedication and service to their 11 family, church, and community; for 27 years they have lived 12 and worked in the Greater Roseland community; and 13 WHEREAS, Melvin Powell, Sr. was employed over the years 14 with the Santa Fe Railroad, the United States Postal Service, 15 and with the Chicago Police Department, where he retired in 16 1984 after 34 years of service; during his career in the 17 Chicago Police Department, Mr. Powell served as the 18 Neighborhood Relations/Community Alternative Policing 19 Sergeant, and at the request of Mayor Richard M. Daley, he 20 took a three month leave from the Police Department to serve 21 as interim Alderman of Chicago's Ninth Ward; he currently 22 serves on the Board of Trustees at New Life Church and is the 23 Sunday School Superintendent; and 24 WHEREAS, Dian Powell is a social worker and has served 25 the Greater Roseland community for almost 30 years through 26 her work at Metropolitan Family Services, where she is 27 currently the Executive Director of the Calumet Center; she 28 has demonstrated commitment in working to promote healthy 29 families and communities within the Greater Roseland 30 community; she is President of the National Association of 31 Black Social Workers-Chicago Chapter, an officer and member 32 of the Board of Directors of Roseland Community Hospital, an -2- LRB9216505RHrhA 1 officer and member of the Board of Directors of Dorothy 2 Sutton Branch Head Start, and a member of the Board of 3 African-American Family Commission; in addition, she has 4 received two government appointments, one from former 5 Governor Jim Edgar and the second from Mayor Richard M. 6 Daley; and 7 WHEREAS, Melvin and Dian Powell will be celebrating their 8 fortieth wedding anniversary with the reaffirmation of their 9 wedding vows on April 20, 2002, at New Life Christian 10 Ministries of Greater Chicago in the presence of family and 11 friends; and 12 WHEREAS, Melvin and Dian Powell stand as examples of the 13 best of our society, and their love and devotion to each 14 other and to their family and friends serve as a reminder to 15 all that hard work, dedication, and love can make a 16 difference in today's world; therefore, be it 17 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 18 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 19 we congratulate Melvin and Dian Powell on the occasion of 20 their fortieth wedding anniversary; that we commend them for 21 achieving a long and happy marriage, blessed with a son and 22 two grandchildren and rich in friendships; and that we wish 23 them happiness and good health in the future; and be it 24 further 25 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 26 presented to Melvin and Dian Powell as an expression of our 27 respect and esteem.
