92_HR0790 LRB9216565RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are honored to recognize milestone events in 4 the history of organizations in the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Boy Scout 6 Troop 1 of Park Ridge is celebrating its 90th anniversary 7 this year; and 8 WHEREAS, Not many Troops have a history and heritage that 9 Boy Scout Troop 1 has; it started in 1910 when Scoutmaster 10 Charles Morrison Dickenson was requested by the First 11 Methodist Church of Park Ridge to form a Boy Scout Troop; in 12 1911, a Boy Scout program was established and on June 22, 13 1912, Boy Scout Troop 1 was officially chartered; and 14 WHEREAS, In the early years, membership varied from 30 to 15 40 scouts; the troop did not camp much but rather 16 concentrated on advancement; when they did camp the favorite 17 spot was dam number 4 on the DesPlaines River, a few miles 18 from Park Ridge; there were many service projects where many 19 of the scouts advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout; and 20 WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1 attended its first National 21 Jamboree in Washington D.C. in 1937; the scouts attended 22 other National Jamborees in 1953 in Pennsylvania, 1959 in 23 Colorado, and several in Virginia in the late 1980s and 24 1990s; and the troop was also represented at several World 25 Jamborees in Europe; and 26 WHEREAS, In the 1950s and 1960s Boy Scout Troop 1 camped 27 throughout the State of Illinois and into Wisconsin, Indiana, 28 and Michigan; the troop also visited historical places 29 including Springfield, Illinois, to follow the famous Lincoln 30 trail; and 31 WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1 has enjoyed annual summer camp -2- LRB9216565RHrh 1 programs offered at Camp Nemacagon, Camp Makajawan, and most 2 recently, Camp Napowan, where the scouts camp in late July 3 and early August; and 4 WHEREAS, In the more recent history, Boy Scout Troop 1 5 has added a high adventure program for the older scouts which 6 gives them the chance to canoe the Canadian Boundary waters, 7 hike the Tooth of Time at Philmont Scout reservation in New 8 Mexico, float and hike the Canyonlands National Park on the 9 Green River in Utah, and hike the Porcupine Mountains in 10 Michigan; the troop has also started climbing expeditions at 11 Devil's Lake Wisconsin and the Mississippi Palisades State 12 Park in Illinois; and 13 WHEREAS, Being an older troop, there has been several 14 generations of families members that have been both scouts 15 and adult leaders; Boy Scout Troop 1 has had an honorable 16 record in the past 90 years; the troop has a flag with many 17 award ribbons presented for jobs well done, including winning 18 first aid meets, klondike derbys, and many other annual 19 events; the troop has received the Presidents award and other 20 National awards as a first class organization due to the 21 troop's strong leadership; and 22 WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1 is truly a boy run troop; the 23 Patrol Leaders are experienced and full of knowledge guiding 24 and teaching the younger scouts in their patrols; in 25 addition, the Patrol leaders help the younger scouts gain 26 advancement in rank, because of this, Boy Scout Troop 1 has 27 had approximately 130 scouts attain the rank of Eagle since 28 1920 and many of them have graduated from colleges with 29 degrees in many different fields of study; some of the scouts 30 that attained the rank of Eagle Scout in the past 8 years 31 have ventured on into various professions, including law, 32 military duty, law enforcement, and sports; and -3- LRB9216565RHrh 1 WHEREAS, The Scouts of the Troop have on a yearly basis 2 collected food for the food pantries in the Park Ridge and 3 Chicago areas; they have also provided community service to 4 the Park Ridge Park District and to the City of Park Ridge; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, Boy Scout Troop 1 will officially celebrate its 7 90th anniversary on May 18, 2002 at the First United 8 Methodist Church in Park Ridge; therefore, be it 9 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 10 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 11 we congratulate Boy Scout Troop 1 of Park Ridge on the 12 celebration of its 90th anniversary; and be it further 13 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 14 presented to Gail Fabish, the current Scoutmaster of Boy 15 Scout Troop 1 as an expression of our esteem.
