92_HR0895 LRB9216852RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, This Illinois House of Representatives has 3 learned with a great mixture of emotions of Michael J. 4 Mahoney's plans to retire as President of the highly 5 respected John Howard Association; and 6 WHEREAS, As Michael J. Mahoney brings to a close a 7 27-year term of service to this nationally regarded 8 organization, there will a unique niche left to be filled; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, Before the John Howard Association, Michael 11 Mahoney served as a regional director and adult probation 12 administrator with the National Council on Crime and 13 Delinquency, as a juvenile institution administrator for the 14 Illinois Department of Corrections and as a juvenile 15 probation officer in Kentucky; and 16 WHEREAS, Michael J. Mahoney has won the respect and 17 admiration of many while working as a tireless advocate for 18 the rights and treatment of one of society's most unpopular 19 sectors, the incarcerated; and 20 WHEREAS, Under usually adverse conditions, Michael J. 21 Mahoney served on countless gubernatorial panels, legislative 22 committees and national task forces to fight for humane 23 treatment and the need for access to substance abuse 24 treatment; and 25 WHEREAS, Michael J. Mahoney's expertise can be best 26 acknowledged by noting that corrections officials in 43 other 27 states and several foreign countries have sought his counsel 28 and advice; and 29 WHEREAS, The quality of his work can best be measured by 30 honors like the Morris J. Wexler Award, the Donald R. 31 Hammergren Award and the E.R. Cass Correctional Achievement -2- LRB9216852RHrh 1 Award; and 2 WHEREAS, In addition to his knowledge of the criminal 3 justice system and passion for fairness, Michael J. Mahoney 4 will always be remembered as a person who brought his Irish 5 sense of humor and a major dose of good will to the task of 6 solving the problems and challenges of our times; therefore, 7 be it 8 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY 9 SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 10 Michael J. Mahoney be commended for demonstrating the true 11 spirit of 18th Century Sheriff of Bedford, England, John 12 Howard, and on behalf of all the people of Illinois he 13 receive our profound thanks for a job well done; and be it 14 further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to Michael J. Mahoney as an expression of our 17 esteem.
