92_HR0988 LRB9217058RHrh 1 HOUSE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 3 Representatives are pleased to recognize notable achievements 4 in the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and 5 WHEREAS, For the past 53 years, Thornal Washington has 6 made a career out of civic service to the younger residents 7 of Chicago Heights; and 8 WHEREAS, Thornal Washington is a graduate of Dunbar High 9 School in Texarkana, Texas and receive his bachelor's degree 10 from Governors State University; and 11 WHEREAS, Mr. Washington began his career in civic service 12 in 1949, when he organized the Chicago Heights Improvement 13 Association and served on the Board of Directors for ten 14 years; from 1951 to 1961, he served as an Advisory Board 15 Member of Girl Scout Troop #621 in Chicago Heights; from 1951 16 to 1994, he served as a Board of Directors Member and fiscal 17 administrator of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago 18 Heights; from 1957 to 1966, he served as a member of the 19 Chicago Heights Planning Commission; from 1957 to 1963, he 20 served as the business manager for the Chicago Heights 21 Community Choir; from 1957 to 1961, he served as chief 22 organizer and coach of the Kool Kids Girls Softball Team in 23 Chicago Heights; and from 1959 to 1967, he served as a 24 community service worker for the Illinois Youth Commission; 25 and 26 WHEREAS, Mr. Washington served from 1960 to 1962 as 27 Chairman of the South Suburban Law and Order Committee; in 28 1960, he organized and established the Chicago Heights 29 Community Youth Committee; in 1961, he organized and 30 established the East Chicago Heights Community Youth 31 Committee; from 1968 to 1973, he served as Corrections 32 Community Service Worker for the Illinois Department of -2- LRB9217058RHrh 1 Corrections, Juvenile Division, Community Services; in 1971, 2 he organized a series of State-wide Governor's Conferences on 3 Youth; and from 1973 to 1976, he served as Corrections 4 Community Service Supervisor for the Illinois Department of 5 Corrections; and 6 WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Washington organized Hickory House, 7 a group home for juvenile boys, in Chicago Heights; in 1974, 8 he served as liaison for Bloom, Thornton, and Rich High 9 Schools to address the issue of student unrest, drugs, 10 vandalism, and assault; in 1975, he served as a member of the 11 Task Force on Regionalization for the Illinois Department of 12 Corrections; and in 1976, he served on the Illinois 13 Commission on Delinquency Prevention, which replaced the 14 Community Service Unit, for the Illinois Department of 15 Corrections; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Washington currently serves as Executive 17 Director of the Chicago Heights Community Youth Committee 18 District Supervisor for the Chicago Area Project, a position 19 he has held for over 20 years; and 20 WHEREAS, For over 50 years, Thornal Washington has 21 dedicated his life to serving the younger residents of 22 Chicago Heights; his dedication, commitment, and service has 23 set an example for them to follow for generations to come; 24 therefore, be it 25 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 26 NINETY-SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 27 we honor Thornal Washington on his 53-year career of civic 28 service and commitment to the younger residents of Chicago 29 Heights; and be it further 30 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 31 presented to Thornal Washington as an expression of our 32 esteem.
